Inuktitut Interpreter

Position Overview

LanguageLine Solutions is hiring an Inuktitut-English Phone Interpreter to work from home as an independent contractor. The interpreter will handle on-demand calls and render the meaning of conversations between Inuktitut and English speakers across a variety of industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911.

Contract and Compensation

Independent contractor position. Pay ranges from $1.25 to $1.40 per minute. The role is not eligible for employee benefits.

Essential Job Functions

• Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
• Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
• Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions, remaining calm during emotionally charged calls, including emergency situations such as 911.
• Ensure punctuality and availability during work hours and follow client instructions in compliance with protocol.
• Maintain cultural sensitivity and understanding of industry terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law sectors.
• Provide service within the dynamic environment of high call volume and extended engagements without breaks when required.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Inuktitut and English with strong cultural competency.
• Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for accurate interpretation.
• Ability to concentrate, stay detached from the conversation, remain neutral, and handle sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters of sexual orientation or gender expression.
• Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, assessment, translation, or interpretation preferred.
• At least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States without future sponsorship requirements.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional reading and writing proficiency in requested languages preferred.
• Must be able to adapt to any LLS technology enhancements that improve service delivery.

Technical Requirements

• Dedicated personal device for business purposes.
• Operating system: Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS on desktop/laptop; iPadOS, Android, or iOS on tablet or smartphone.
• High‑speed Internet connection: download ≥5Mbps, upload ≥3Mbps, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms.
• Quiet, secure workspace free from background noise or distraction.

Physical Requirements

• Operate keyboard and mouse while seated in front of a computer for most of the workday.
• Type or write with sufficient manual dexterity.
• May lift up to 26lbs and be exposed to moderate computer, audio, or telephone noise.
