The Internal Medicine Technician is involved in all aspects of internal medicine, and contributes to client care and communication. The Internal Medicine Technician is responsible for monitoringhospitalizedpatients,assistingwithandadministeringtreatments,patientcare,client education, scheduling, assisting with procedures and answering technician calls. The Internal Medicine Technician works under the primary direction of the Lead Technician and the Technician Supervisor.

DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES

ProcedureKnowledge

  • Endoscopy-Setup,assistwith,andcleanandmaintainequipmentforGIendoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, and cystoscopy.
  • Maintainsteriletechnique.
  • Setupandassistwithcommoninternalmedicineprocedures:transtrachealwash, biopsies, bone marrow cytology/biopsy.

DiagnosticTestingSkills

Laboratorysamples:RunautomatedCBCs,bloodchemistries,I-stats,refractometerand prepare and read blood films.

  • Urinesamples:UAwithsediment,Cultures,UPC, etc.
  • Fecalsamples:cytology evaluation
  • BGcurves,ACTHstims,BileAcids, etc.
  • Proficientatobtainingbloodpressures,EKGreadings,anddiagnostic radiography
  • Prepareappropriatelabformsandsubmitappropriate samples.

TechnicalSkills

  • Assistdoctorsandfellowtechnicianswithappropriaterestraintofanimals.
  • Proficientatvenipuncture,cystocentesis,placemaleurinarycatheters,central lines.
  • AdministerandinstructclientinSCfluid,EtudeorPEGtubefeedings,andinsulin administration.

MedicalandTreatmentKnowledge

  • Prepare and administer medications and prescriptions in accordance with state regulationsanddoctor’sorders(includingIV,IM,SC,PO,Rectal,Nebulization,etc.)
  • Anesthesia:Administerandmonitoranesthesiainaccordancewithstateregulationsand doctors’ orders. Troubleshoot and identify problems with critical patients under anesthesia.
  • Commoninternalmedicinediseases:diabetes,Cushing’s,IMHA, etc.
  • CPRknowledgeand experience

CommunicationSkills

  • Haveapositiveattitudeandwillingtolearnnew procedures.
  • Keepdoctorsapprisedofpatient’sconditionandanypotential problems.
  • Communicate with clients regarding the medical information of their pet, provide accurateinformationtothemregardingprocedures,followup/homecare,hospital policies; diagnostics and basic disease processes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Twoyearsofrecentexperienceinveterinarypracticewithincreasing responsibility.

Experiencewithinternalmedicineproceduresincludingbutnotlimitedto:Endoscopy: set up, assist with, and clean and maintain equipment for GI endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, and cystoscopy. Set up and assist with common internal medicine procedures: transtracheal wash, biopsies, bone marrow cytology/ biopsy.
