Job Description

To provide clinical nursing support to the Internal & Family Medicine Department and providers, adhere to all policies and procedures of MMC, and meet the needs of patients in a teamwork approach.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a clinic setting and involves direct patient care, face-to-face communication with patients, and handling of specimens. There is exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bodily fluids, and other clinical hazards. Activities include walking, bending, reaching, lifting up to 30 pounds, stooping, assisting patients, and sitting for extended periods. Documentation is performed on a laptop or desktop computer, and the work space may involve occasional loud noise and stress from multiple responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Obtain Vital Signs, including manual blood pressures for patients.
  • Collect specimens, perform testing, and deliver specimens to laboratory if necessary.
  • Set up and assist in exam rooms and procedure rooms as needed.
  • Administer vaccinations and adhere to CDC vaccination guidelines.
  • Utilize EHR to document and manage the patient’s chart.
  • Reconcile the patient’s medication list at each visit.
  • Schedule procedures and educate patients on any required preparation.
  • Notify patients of test results as directed by doctor/provider via telephone, patient portal, or mailing letter.
  • Document all results communicated with patients in the EHR.
  • Administer and accurately document medication injections, oral medications, and topical medications as ordered.
  • Maintain and distribute sample medications as indicated by clinic standards.
  • Document all communications with patients and act as a liaison between the patient and the provider, as well as the patient and other health care agencies.
  • Advocate for patients when needed.
  • Manage prescription refills following the department medication refill policy.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Be knowledgeable in preventative care and quality measures, following CDC guidelines and meeting departmental quality goals yearly.
  • Use all computer systems and applications employed in the department, including the EHR, Practice Management Program, Microsoft Office, Multisystem Phone, Phreesia, and other added systems.
  • Obtain AHA Basic Life Saver Certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Adhere to OSHA guidelines and MMC policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Ability to multitask.
  • Effective communication with co-workers, doctors/providers, and patients, including telephone callers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Physical stamina to perform work for 12 hours, including walking, bending, lifting up to 30 lbs, reaching, stooping, assisting patients, and sitting.
  • Ability to work on a computer screen for 12 hours.
  • Role modeling appropriate behavior.
  • Calm and competent reaction in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, co-workers, and vendors.
  • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing assignments.
  • Customer service skills, including service recovery and de-escalation.

Education / Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Licensed LPN preferred.
  • Experience preferred but not required.
