Start Date: ASAP - goal is to have someone start before Nov 1 (ideally)

Our partner is undergoing a broader transformation focused on strengthening and modernizing the organization’s overall Clinical Engineering operating model. The Director of Clinical Engineering will play a key leadership role in driving this transformation, beginning with their flagship hospital and supporting the development of a scalable model that can ultimately be leveraged across the broader health system.

This leader will be responsible for evaluating the current state of the Clinical Engineering organization, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing and executing a future-state strategy across people, processes, technology, equipment management, compliance, and service delivery.

The ideal candidate is a proven Clinical Engineering/Biomed leader who has previously managed or transformed a hospital or health system CE organization. They should have experience leading teams, improving operational performance, standardizing processes, strengthening equipment management programs, and partnering with clinical and executive leadership to elevate the overall function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Clinical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering organization.
  • Assess the current-state CE operation, including organizational structure, staffing, workflows, equipment management, service delivery, and performance.
  • Develop and execute a future-state Clinical Engineering strategy aligned with organizational and clinical priorities.
  • Lead organizational transformation initiatives focused on standardization, efficiency, accountability, and service quality.
  • Establish consistent policies, procedures, workflows, and performance expectations across Clinical Engineering.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor BMETs, senior technicians, managers, and other CE personnel.
  • Evaluate staffing models, skill sets, coverage, and organizational structure to ensure the department can effectively support clinical operations.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators around equipment uptime, PM completion, work order performance, response times, equipment lifecycle, and service quality.
  • Strengthen preventive and corrective maintenance programs and ensure appropriate documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee the management and lifecycle of the organization's biomedical equipment assets.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, IT, Information Security, Facilities, Nursing, Perioperative Services, Clinical Operations, and other stakeholders on medical technology initiatives.
  • Develop strong relationships with clinical leadership and serve as a strategic advisor regarding medical equipment and Clinical Engineering capabilities.
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve the use of technology, CMMS/asset management systems, analytics, and automation within CE.
  • Oversee vendor relationships, third-party service agreements, and equipment service strategies.
  • Support capital planning, equipment replacement strategies, budgeting, and lifecycle management.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, safety, and industry standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the overall patient-care environment through greater equipment reliability, standardization, and operational efficiency.
  • Establish a scalable operating model that can support the broader UMMS system as the CE transformation progresses.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 8+ years of progressive Clinical Engineering / Biomedical Engineering experience.
  • Significant leadership experience as a Director, Manager, Senior Manager, or equivalent CE/Biomed leader.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, rebuilding, standardizing, or transforming a Clinical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering department or multiple hospital shops.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary CE/Biomed teams and developing technical leadership.
  • Strong understanding of hospital biomedical equipment management and the broader Clinical Engineering function.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational processes, standards, and performance metrics.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with hospital executives and clinical leadership.
  • Experience with budgeting, capital planning, vendor management, and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Experience with CMMS/clinical asset management platforms and data-driven equipment management.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • CBET or other relevant professional certification is preferred.

Key Differentiator

The strongest candidate will not simply be someone who has managed a Biomed team. We are specifically looking for a leader who has been responsible for changing how a Clinical Engineering organization operates—whether through restructuring a department, standardizing multiple hospital shops, improving performance, implementing new processes or technology, developing teams, or creating a more scalable CE operating model.

The role requires someone who can operate at both levels: strategically with executive leadership and operationally with the BMET/Clinical Engineering teams responsible for executing the work.
