Hybrid Contract Staffing and Recruiting

Department: Information Technology - Digital Engineering Group

Location: Bethesda, MD / Hybrid

Reports to: Director of Technology Architecture & Platforms

Role type: Senior individual contributor with no direct reports

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Integration Engineer to build, deploy, and support enterprise integrations, including workflows, custom APIs, connectors, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and tools. This hands-on role owns assigned integrations throughout their lifecycle and provides practical feedback to the Director of Technology Architecture & Platforms on platform architecture and engineering improvements.

The role sits within Integration Engineering, one of three subgroups in the Digital Engineering Group alongside Application Engineering and Quality Engineering. Integration Engineering is responsible for all enterprise integrations across Azure Integration Services (AIS), Celigo, and any other new or ad hoc integration platforms.

Role Mandate

  • Take hands-on ownership of integration delivery, data correctness, reliability, and production support.
  • Build reusable integrations, APIs, and MCP capabilities that connect enterprise systems and support business processes.
  • Use implementation and operational experience to help improve platform architecture, integration patterns, and engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

Hands On Integration Delivery

  • Design, build, configure, and troubleshoot integrations using Logic Apps Standard, Service Bus, Event Grid, Azure Functions, and Celigo integrator.io.
  • Develop Celigo connections, flows, mappings, lookups, and JavaScript hooks, including scheduling, error handling, and secure connectivity.
  • Implement API-led, event-driven, batch, file, and database integrations; define data mappings, transformations, validation, and synchronization behavior.
  • Own integrations on additional or ad hoc platforms, document dependencies and support procedures, and recommend standardization or migration where appropriate.

API and Connector Development

  • Build custom APIs, webhooks, adapters, and connectors where needed, using approved languages such as C#/.NET, Python, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Define OpenAPI contracts, schemas, versioning, authentication, authorization, pagination, rate-limit handling, and consistent error responses.
  • Apply enterprise API standards and gateway controls, including Azure API Management where adopted, and maintain compatibility for consuming applications.

Key Responsibilities Continued

MCP and AI Integration Engineering

  • Build and maintain MCP servers and tools that connect approved AI applications and agents to enterprise APIs, data, and integration workflows.
  • Define tool descriptions, input and output schemas, validation, and error behavior; test tool discovery, execution, and client interoperability.
  • Implement scoped access, protected downstream credentials, audit trails, and approved controls for operations that change data or trigger business processes.
  • Maintain compatibility with supported MCP protocols and SDKs and document tool capabilities, permissions, dependencies, and operational requirements.

Platform Architecture Feedback and Engineering Practices

  • Collaborate with the Director of Technology Architecture & Platforms on platform architecture, offering implementation-based feedback on runtime selection, scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost.
  • Help design and implement integration coding practices, reusable frameworks, workflow templates, connectors, and common error-handling patterns; document and support their adoption.
  • Build prototypes to evaluate technical approaches and resolve implementation uncertainties before full development, including new platforms and integration capabilities.
  • Work with architects to translate solution designs into integration designs, document tradeoffs, identify platform limitations, and recommend improvements or simplification.

Security Reliability and Production Operations

  • Implement least-privilege access, managed identities where supported, approved credential stores, encryption, and secure network connectivity with cybersecurity and cloud teams.
  • Apply data classification and handling requirements; minimize data movement and keep credentials and sensitive payloads out of logs, run histories, and message metadata.
  • Build in timeouts, retries with backoff, duplicate prevention, dead-letter handling, and controlled replay; reconcile source and target records to detect missed or incorrect transactions.
  • Implement monitoring, alerts, transaction correlation, and diagnostic logging; resolve production incidents, maintain recovery procedures, and address recurring failures and performance issues.

Testing Deployment and Cross Team Delivery

  • Develop automated unit, contract, and integration tests; partner with Quality Engineering on end-to-end, performance, security, failure, and recovery testing.
  • Use source control, CI/CD, configuration management, and infrastructure as code where applicable with Developer Experience; manage environment promotion, rollback, and release readiness.
  • Coordinate with Application Engineering, data and AI teams, business owners, and vendors on interfaces and dependencies; maintain integration designs, catalog entries, ownership, and support documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in integration engineering, software development, or enterprise technology, including substantial hands-on integration delivery.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience guiding integration designs, reviewing code or configurations, and mentoring engineers.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure Integration Services, including Logic Apps, Service Bus, and Event Grid, and custom integration development using Azure Functions or comparable services.
  • Hands-on experience building and supporting Celigo integrator.io integrations, including connections, flows, mappings, scripting, and error handling.
  • Strong development skills in C#/.NET, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript, including JavaScript proficiency for integration scripting and platform extensions.
  • Experience building REST APIs, webhooks, and connectors and working with OpenAPI, JSON/XML, SQL, messaging, and API or event versioning.
  • Hands-on experience developing MCP servers and tools, including enterprise API connectivity, access controls, and testing.
  • Experience with OAuth/OIDC, service identities, secrets management, secure data handling, automated testing, CI/CD, and integration monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production failures, reconcile data, assess architecture tradeoffs, and explain findings clearly to technical and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure API Management, Key Vault, Application Insights, Log Analytics, private connectivity, and integration deployment automation.
  • Experience connecting ERP, CRM, financial, SaaS, and legacy systems, including NetSuite, DealCloud, Appian, or comparable enterprise applications.
  • Experience building reusable integration frameworks, modernizing point-to-point integrations, and bringing ad hoc solutions into managed engineering practices.
  • Experience in financial services or another regulated environment; relevant Azure or Celigo certifications.

What Success Looks Like

  • Integrations meet agreed business and technical requirements, deliver accurate data, and operate reliably in production.
  • Reusable APIs, connectors, event flows, and MCP tools reduce duplicated integration work and are documented for consumers.
  • Platform architecture decisions improve through clear feedback grounded in implementation, testing, and operational evidence.
  • Failures are detected promptly, recovery is controlled, and recurring issues lead to lasting engineering improvements.
  • Integrations across AIS, Celigo, and additional platforms have clear ownership, automated checks, versioned releases, and support documentation.
