Instructional Assistant K-5 Character Class

Provide support to the teacher in the instruction of students. This position is responsible to the classroom teacher and/or the school administrators and will carry out such duties as determined by and in support of those teachers. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students, plans and materials will be provided. Must drive school bus.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gives group instruction and provides individualized instruction as prescribed by the teacher.
  • Praises and reinforces achievement of students.
  • Reports student progress to the teacher.
  • Serves as substitute teacher.
  • Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment.
  • Prepares visual aids and duplicates materials.
  • Reorganizes materials at the end of day.
  • Serves as proctor during testing.
  • Morning and afternoon carpool duties
  • Lunch and recess monitoring
  • Classroom monitoring and classroom management
  • Monitors work assigned by teacher
  • Individual student support and tutoring
  • Checks and corrects students' work while in progress and keeps students on task
  • Instructional preparation/support
  • Distributes and collects instructional materials
  • Completes and organizes paperwork and other support documents
  • Plans and prepares for the instructional activities with the classroom teacher
  • Contributes to a positive classroom environment where every child is motivated to achieve
  • Assists in escorting and supervising students to other locations
  • Assists teachers with non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack, lunch, bulletin boards, and other daily routines
  • Secures and organizes classroom supplies
  • Assists in reading, storytelling, calendar, and other appropriate activities
  • Assists small groups of students in the library, art class, computer lab, etc. as needed
  • Prepares instructional materials
  • Participates in appropriate in-service activities
  • Assists with classroom discipline
  • Attends meetings of the school as directed
  • Observes student performance and assists students in correcting seat work as it is being done
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining the classroom in clean, orderly, and functional condition
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator
  • Strives to be a desirable example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress

Desired Training and Hands-On Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent degree.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Physical Requirements: Position requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
  • Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate eyes and hands to use the keyboard.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

Assessment: Performance of this job will be assessed annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on assessment of administrative personnel.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year as established by the Board.
