Instructional Aide, Special Education
Under general direction of the Certificated Instructional Support Personnel, perform a variety of instructional and behavioral support activities for special education students, help students needing physical assistance related to medical or health disabilities, help to interpret the school program for the community and provide community feedback to the classroom experience.
Performance Responsibilities
- Perform instructional related activities such as the presentation of lessons for special education students.
- Correct tests and homework
- Prepare instructional materials for general and special needs students
- Organize and teach small learning centers
- Assist the teacher in specialized demonstrations
- Assist special education students in using instructional materials and equipment
- Assist in implementing and assessing student IEP goals.
- Assist in supervision and behavioral intervention of students.
- Perform generalized activities such as maintaining and organizing student records, classroom materials
- Perform clerical duties related to special education
- Prepare student work areas
- Assist students with lifting, carrying, personal hygiene, mobility and structural adaptations and medical needs
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of basic classroom procedures; computer functions and applications; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; CPR and First Aid.
Understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively both in oral and written form; learn to assist with feeding, personal hygiene, orthopedic appliances, braces and other special and medical needs of students, establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relations with children and adults.
ADA Requirement: Must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, frequently lift objects weighing approximately 10 lbs. (i.e. paperwork, files), occasionally lift objects weighing up to 70 lbs. a distance of two to four feet (transport students from wheelchairs to changing tables), push, pull, drag, and grasp objects.
Previous experience in a classroom setting is desired.
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. Must be able to pass standard proficiency test of basic knowledge.
Valid California Drivers License required.
