I’m looking for a senior Infrastructure Cloud Architect who is still genuinely hands-on.
The sweet spot is a Senior/Lead Infrastructure Engineer ready to step into architecture, or an experienced Infrastructure Architect who has never stopped engineering.
This is not an application architecture role, and it is not a DevOps role. My client is undergoing a significant Azure-first hybrid infrastructure transformation, including exiting legacy data centers and expanding its Azure footprint.
You’ll help define the future-state architecture—but you'll also be expected to roll up your sleeves and work directly with the technology.
What I’m looking for:
- 10+ years across enterprise infrastructure engineering/architecture
- Deep, hands-on Microsoft Azure infrastructure experience
- Significant Azure + on-prem hybrid cloud expertise
- Strong Azure networking: VNets, routing, DNS, ExpressRoute, private endpoints, firewalls, load balancing and segmentation
- Strong foundation across networking, security, compute, servers and storage
- VMware and Azure VMware Solution (AVS)
- Azure IaaS
- Identity, RBAC, security controls and cloud governance
- Infrastructure as Code
- Infrastructure resiliency, troubleshooting and root-cause analysis in complex enterprise environments
- Ability to create architecture diagrams, standards and reusable patterns
- Strong communication skills with both engineers and leadership
The biggest thing I'm screening for:
What did YOU personally design, build, configure, implement and troubleshoot?
I'm looking for someone who can say:
“I designed it. I built it. I configured it. I supported it. I troubleshot it.”
Not someone whose recent experience has primarily been coordinating cloud migrations, managing implementation partners or reviewing the work of engineering teams.
During the first year, expect approximately 60% architecture/strategy and 40% hands-on engineering and operational support. You'll also serve as a senior escalation point during critical infrastructure incidents.
📍 Chicago – hybrid, 3 days onsite / 2 remote
💰 $161,400–$200,000 base salary + comprehensive benefits
☎️ On-call rotation approximately every 6–7 weeks
USC/GC only – no current or future sponsorship
