Job Title: Ignition Developer
Location: Remote(NY, NJ) (Only first week is onsite at your nearer location)
Duration: Contract
Description
The Ignition Developer will design, configure, develop, test, deploy, and support industrial automation solutions using the Inductive Automation Ignition platform. The role supports a portfolio of laboratory and process automation initiatives spanning bioreactor modernization, centralized automation hubs, potent-compound laboratory digitalization, automated process monitoring and control, cell-health analytics, and integrated manufacturing workflows.
Develop reusable Ignition solutions for supervisory control, process orchestration, equipment integration, operator interfaces, alarming, historization, reporting, and real-time visualization.
Integrate laboratory instruments, analyzers, automation equipment, programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems, robotics, historians, databases, and enterprise data platforms.
Implement recipe-driven workflows, automated sampling and feeding, event-based actions, equipment-state monitoring, exception handling, and operator-guided procedures.
Build solutions that can operate across shared facility infrastructure and dedicated facility deployments while following approved architecture, cybersecurity, and support standards.
Partner with scientists, automation engineers, business analysts, architects, data engineers, infrastructure teams, quality representatives, vendors, and system integrators.
Create maintainable technical designs and reusable patterns rather than isolated, one-off applications.
Role purpose and business need
The portfolio requires an additional hands-on developer who can translate scientific and operational workflows into robust Ignition applications and integrations. The work includes connecting diverse instruments and control systems, coordinating automated process steps, routing real-time data, supporting local decision and control loops, and exposing contextualized information to historians and downstream data platforms. The developer will also help standardize implementation patterns so common capabilities can be reused across facilities and initiatives.
Required skills / experience
5+ years of industrial automation, supervisory control and data acquisition, manufacturing systems, or laboratory automation development experience.
Demonstrated hands-on experience developing and deploying solutions with Inductive Automation Ignition.
Experience with Ignition Perspective and/or Vision, tag configuration, user-defined types, alarming, historization, reporting, gateway administration, security, and scripting.
Strong Python or Jython scripting skills and working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
Experience integrating control systems and devices using OPC UA and at least one additional integration approach such as MQTT/Sparkplug, REST APIs, message queues, or file exchange.
Experience integrating programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems, instruments, analyzers, or robotics in operational environments.
Understanding of industrial network segmentation, gateway placement, communication paths, service accounts, certificates, and secure connectivity.
Experience designing modular, reusable, supportable applications using source control, peer review, coding standards, and structured release practices.
Ability to troubleshoot across application, gateway, network, device, database, and integration layers.
Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to engineering, scientific, operational, and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred skills / experience
Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life-sciences research, laboratory, pilot-plant, or regulated manufacturing environments.
Experience with bioreactors, process analytical technology, spectroscopy, autosamplers, analyzers, robotics, or scientific instruments.
Experience integrating Ignition with DeltaV or comparable distributed control systems, process historians, laboratory informatics platforms, or scientific data platforms.
Knowledge of time-series data, contextualized process data, model execution, publish/subscribe patterns, store-and-forward behavior, and real-time visualization.
Understanding of ISA-88, ISA-95, Purdue-model concepts, electronic records, audit trails, data integrity, and validation expectations.
Experience with regulated software delivery, computer-system validation, change control, testing, and controlled documentation.
Experience leading or technically overseeing third-party Ignition integrators.
Inductive Automation Ignition certification or equivalent demonstrated platform expertise.
