VMware L3 – Key Responsibilities - 60% Knowledge
Install, configure, and manage VMware ESXi hosts and vCenter Server.
Configure and manage:
- HA (High Availability)
- DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler)
- Resource Pools
- VMware Clusters
Manage VMware Lifecycle Manager for patching and firmware compliance.
Perform VM migrations using:
- vMotion
- Cold Migration
- P2V (VMware Converter)
Storage administration:
- Datastore expansion
- Storage performance monitoring
- VMDK growth and management
VM administration:
- Snapshot management
- VMware Tools upgrades
- CPU/Memory expansion
- VM recovery from Veeam backups
Troubleshoot complex VMware issues and act as the final escalation point for L1/L2 teams.
Perform root-cause analysis of performance, storage, host, and cluster issues.
Support critical migration projects and maintain migration runbooks
- Install & configure Hyper V Role, Create and manage Virtual Machines, Generation 1 vs Generation 2 VMs, VHD / VHDX creation and management
- Dynamic vs Static Memory, Virtual CPU allocation & NUMA awareness, Integration Services
- Live Migration & Storage Live Migration, Node Majority, Node + File Share Witness,Cluster validation,Cluster Aware Updating (CAU)
- Evaluate current Hyper-V environment, storage, network, and compute resources.
- Hyper-V Manager Proficiency, PowerShell Scripting, Networking in Hyper-V, Storage Management, Cluster & High Availability Setup, Performance Monitoring & Tuning
- Set up live migration parameters, storage paths, and network configurations.
- Perform complex migrations: Handle critical workloads, clustered environments, and cross-domain migrations.
- Optimize performance: Tune VM settings and host configurations for minimal downtime and maximum efficiency.
- Resolve high-level issues: Address failures in replication, compatibility problems, and performance bottlenecks.
- Log analysis: Review event logs, migration reports, and system diagnostics to identify root causes.
- Escalation point: Act as the final escalation tier for unresolved issues from Level 1 and Level 2 teams.
- Maintain migration runbooks: Document procedures, fallback plans, and post-migration validation steps.
- Ensure compliance: Validate that migration adheres to security, data protection, and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate with stakeholders: Work with Client stake holders, project managers, application owners, and infrastructure teams.
- Mentor junior staff: Guide Level 1 and Level 2 & Level 3 engineers on best practices and troubleshooting techniques.
- Strong ESXi VMware skilled resource handled critical migrations:
- Mware vSphere/ESXi: Experience with VMware helps understand VM lifecycle, resource allocation, and migration concepts.
- KVM or Xen: Familiarity with other hypervisors builds transferable skills in virtual machine management.
- Migrate tools knowledge : Especially useful for Hyper-V to Azure or relevant OS transitions. Knowing how to assess, replicate, and migrate workloads is critical
