Hy-Chi Department Manager

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function

As a Hy-Chi Department Manager, this position will be responsible for setting the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability. You will coordinate the delivery of the freshest and best quality product at a competitive retail price, ensuring a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

  • Accountable and reports to: District Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health & Wellness Home; Food Service Director.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a positive attitude; create an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork.
  • Generate a friendly atmosphere by encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers; provide prompt, courteous, and efficient service to customers and set a good example.
  • Set the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making notes of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, and performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product orders.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees.
  • Determine department goals with the store director.
  • Determine the weekly work schedule and establish a daily work plan for the department.
  • Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity of merchandise and order product for replenishment.
  • Communicate with employees regarding sales and ideas; handle and satisfy customer issues.
  • Figure retail pricing and insure correct pricing.
  • Extend invoices, post invoices, and oversee department bookkeeping procedures.
  • Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends and compare to actuals; prepare ad projections and write ads.
  • Conduct inventory of the department.
  • Plan displays, promotions, and determine pre-orders.
  • Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee freshness and control shrinkage of product.
  • Understand and troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance is performed.
  • Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work when scheduled and work expected number of hours.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure pricing is competitive in the market area.
  • Attend meetings and seminars and participate in continuing education.
  • Unload trucks, place product in appropriate storage area, and replenish merchandise.
  • Fill displays, check in delivered merchandise, and work in the sales area.
  • Perform departmental duties as needed.
  • Assist in other areas of store as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Instruct, assign, review, and plan work of others.
  • Maintain standards, coordinate activities, allocate personnel, act on employee problems, and select new employees.
  • Have the authority to approve employee discipline.
  • Have the authority to recommend employee transfer, discharge, and salary increases.

Education and Experience

  • High school or equivalent experience and over one year of related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics

  • Ability to solve practical problems involving a variety of variables with limited standardization; interpret instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to compose original correspondence; interpret written work instructions; interview job applicants; follow technical manuals; and maintain increased contact with people.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force (shared team lifting) occasionally; up to 50 pounds frequently; and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions

This position is frequently exposed to temperature extremes and dampness. Possible equipment movement hazards, electrical shock, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents. This is a fast‑paced work environment.

Equipment Used to Perform Job

  • Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, kitchen utensils, wrapping machine, pallet jacks, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, box cutter, computer, and calculator.

Financial Responsibility

Responsible for company assets, including equipment and merchandise.

Contacts

Daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Occasional contact with local, federal, or state regulatory agencies regarding inspections.

Confidentiality

Has access to confidential information including employee compensation, monthly results, quarterly inventory reports, sales and profit sheets, and warehouse pricing.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre‑employment drug screen.
