Founded in 1963, Hammett Excavation is a Texas-based heavy civil excavation and site development contractor with more than 60 years of history and a reputation built on hard work, integrity, and getting the job done right. We're in an aggressive growth phase — and we're building the leadership and people infrastructure to match it. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build a modern HR function inside a company with deep roots and serious momentum.
About the Role
Hammett Excavation is hiring a Director of Human Resources to lead our people function company-wide. This role owns recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, compensation and benefits administration, HRIS management, and culture and leadership development for our office and field teams.
You\'ll be joining at a pivotal moment — helping build the systems, processes, and programs that support our growth, including a new pay-for-performance compensation model. This is a role for someone who genuinely enjoys building infrastructure that helps other people succeed.
What You\'ll Do
- Own full-cycle recruiting and onboarding for both field and office positions
- Administer and optimize our HRIS (Paycom), activating modules for benefits, performance management, and time & attendance
- Lead administration of our pay-for-performance and bonus programs alongside the CFO
- Manage employee relations, policy enforcement, and compliance with applicable employment law
- Build and maintain job descriptions and support org chart development
- Lead benefits administration, including open enrollment and carrier relationships
- Champion culture and engagement initiatives across the company
- Support leadership development programming for our executive and management teams
- Track and report HR metrics (turnover, time-to-fill, headcount) to leadership
- Manage the HR budget
What We\'re Looking For
- Bachelor\'s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of progressive HR leadership experience
- A natural strength in building processes, systems, and support structures that help others succeed
- Working knowledge of employment law and HRIS administration
Preferred:
- Experience in construction or another field-heavy, blue-collar workforce environment
- Experience with Paycom or comparable HRIS platforms
- A 60+ year company in an active, well-funded growth phase
- A true seat at the leadership table — this role reports directly into executive leadership
- The opportunity to build a people function from the ground up, not maintain someone else\'s system
- A culture that still feels like family, backed by the structure of a company scaling toward $250M+ in revenue
Hammett Excavation, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
