Description

We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Director with a minimum of 10 + years’ experience, with 3-5 years experience in a leadership role in the Nashville, TN area.

This position will lead the people strategy for a multi-branch commercial HVAC/Plumbing/Mechanical services business. Own retention, talent acquisition, compensation strategy, M&A integration, payroll/benefits operations, and succession planning to build high-performing field and office teams aligned to service, retrofit, and construction portfolios.

Talent acquisition and retention

  • Build role-specific recruiting playbooks (installers, service techs, installers, estimators, PMs.
  • Stand up fast, field-friendly hiring workflows: structured interviews, skills assessments, SLAs, and candidate experience that shortens cycle time.
  • Track and act on funnel KPIs: time-to-fill, days-in-stage, offer acceptance, quality-of-hire, early attrition.

Compensation strategy and total rewards

  • Design market-based compensation architecture: geographic differentials, skill-based pay progressions, and service/project incentives aligned to margin and customer outcomes.
  • Lead annual compensation cycles, market pricing, and pay equity reviews with finance and branch leadership.
  • Oversee payroll operations and health benefits programs, including open enrollment, carrier/broker management, eligibility, audits, and compliance with plan documents.

Workforce planning and performance

  • Implement performance management that is practical for field leaders: goal setting, coaching, and corrective action frameworks that improve delivery and documentation discipline.

M&A integration

  • Lead HR due diligence, risk assessment, and people cost modeling.
  • Drive Day 1 readiness, org design, policy/benefit harmonization, change communications, and retention planning for critical roles.
  • Establish post-close integration milestones and success metrics (continuity of key personnel, time-to-productivity, policy adoption).

Succession planning and leadership development

  • Create readiness matrices and development plans for key roles and leadership.
  • Define career ladders and learning pathways (technical and leadership) with clear skill checkpoints and promotion criteria.
  • Increase internal fill rate and bench strength through targeted stretch assignments, mentorship, and targeted training.

Compliance and HR operations

  • Ensure multi-state employment compliance, licensing prerequisites, background checks, DOT/FMCSA applicability, and policy governance.
  • Standardize HRIS configurations and field-friendly processes; drive data accuracy and self-service adoption.
    Lead investigations and fair, consistent employee relations practices; coach leaders on early resolution and documentation.

Metrics and reporting

  • Maintain HR analytics and dashboards highlighting: time-to-fill, offer acceptance rate, first-90-day retention, voluntary turnover, internal fill rate, labor utilization, subcontractor spend, and branch/project-level visibility.
  • Translate insights into action plans with branch leaders; publish monthly scorecards and quarterly business reviews.
Requirements
  • 10+ years progressive HR experience, including 3–5+ years in a leadership role supporting field services, mechanical/HVAC, construction, or building services.
  • Proven results improving time-to-fill, retention, internal fill rate.
  • Expertise in compensation strategy, market pricing, and incentive design.
  • Hands-on leadership of payroll operations and health care program/benefits administration.
  • M&A integration experience: diligence through post-close execution.
  • Familiarity with commercial HVAC talent markets, certifications and role profiles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, or related field; SHRM-SCP or SPHR preferred.
