Role on the Team

Position of Physician Assistant (PA) (90%) in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine & Palliative Medicine requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will practice in Hospital Medicine under supervision of faculty and following applicable policies. The PA will participate in comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi‑disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

• Functions as appropriate to scope of practice, including management of chronic, acute, and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedure.
• Obtain approved privileges unique to each person; experts are responsible for standard privileges.
• Provide patient care across age groups and all hospital licensed settings.
• Maintain standards of care, demonstrate self‑direction and accountability to quality of care and role development across all health locations.
• Credentialed to practice and privileged through Medical Staff prior to first working day.
• Accountable to, evaluated by, and receiving feedback from supervising physicians or administrative manager.

What It Takes to be Successful

• Clear understanding of core internal medicine principles.
• Knowledge of medical history elements and history‑taking skills.
• Expertise in and appropriate physical exam skills.
• Demonstrated experience reviewing and using standard protocols for Hospital Medicine patients.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
• Diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
• Customer service skills appropriate to the job.
• Ability to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people in person and over the telephone.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, and maintain a work pace appropriate to workload.
• Essential skill, knowledge and ability to perform assigned duties.
• Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
• Understanding and adherence to privacy, confidentiality and security policies for PHI.
• Multilingual.
• Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board of the Medical Board of California.
• Completion of an accredited physician assistant training program approved by ARC‑PA.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
• National board certification by NCCPA at time of initial appointment.
• Experience working with patients undergoing single and combined modality treatment plans.

Special Conditions

• Documentation of care (# and type of cases/procedures) performed within the last 24 months, representative of scope and complexity of privileges requested.
• Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional privileges prior to hire.
