The Hospice Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational performance of the hospice agency. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and compassionate end-of-life care while driving census growth, financial performance, and team engagement. The Executive Director serves as the primary leader for clinical, administrative, and business development functions.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day leadership of hospice operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee interdisciplinary team performance, including clinical, administrative, and support staff
  • Foster a culture of accountability, compassion, and continuous improvement

Clinical & Quality Oversight

  • Partner with the Director of Clinical Services to ensure delivery of high-quality patient care
  • Monitor quality metrics, patient satisfaction, and compliance indicators
  • Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local hospice regulations, including Conditions of Participation
  • Manage P&L performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost controls
  • Drive census growth and optimize reimbursement under Medicare Hospice Benefit
  • Identify and execute strategies to improve margin while maintaining quality of care

Business Development & Growth

  • Lead local market growth initiatives, including referral development with hospitals, physicians, SNFs, and community partners
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key referral sources
  • Collaborate with sales/liaison teams to achieve census and admission targets

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, accreditation standards, and internal policies
  • Lead survey readiness and response efforts (state and federal)
  • Maintain accurate documentation and reporting practices
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing team members
  • Provide coaching and performance management to direct reports
  • Promote employee engagement and a mission-driven culture

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree (Healthcare Administration, Nursing, or related field) preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years of leadership experience in hospice, home health, or post-acute care
  • Strong understanding of hospice regulations, reimbursement, and clinical operations
  • Demonstrated success in driving census growth and financial performance
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to build and lead high-performing teams
