Heavy Equipment OperatorIt's fun to work in a company where people truly believe in what they're doing!We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business.Under the general supervision of an assigned lead or foreman, operates a variety of heavy and light equipment in the maintenance and repair of city drainage infrastructure. Participates in general maintenance and labor activities as necessary for the timely completion of projects and work orders.The Heavy Equipment Operator role includes two specialization areas. All operators perform shared essential functions to ensure safe and effective equipment operation.
Each operator is assigned to one specialization, which includes additional duties and technical skills unique to that focus. There are vacancies in each area.Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Operates heavy and light construction equipment in the performance of drainage-related tasks to reduce flooding.Excavates using construction equipment to set curbs, lay drainpipe, and clean drainage ditches.Re-grades ditches, clean culverts, storm sewers, and ponds in order to reduce and minimize flooding.Sets forms for curbs and drain inlets.Drives dump truck and other city trucks; pulls trailer hauling construction equipment.Digs, hauls, sets rebar and forms, pours and finishes concrete.Operates mower, sprayers containing herbicides and weed eater to clear grass and weeds from vacant lots, telephone poles, signs, curbs, guardrails and fire hydrants.Cuts and clears fallen and overgrown trees.Conducts safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, sets up barricades, cones and road signs, wears protective and safety gear as indicated for the work assignment.Prepares, gathers and transports tools, materials, supplies and equipment necessary to complete work assignments.Cleans and repairs work site upon completion of construction.Serves as lead and provides on the job training to light equipment operators.Provides assistance to the Street Department.Performs related duties as assigned.Heavy Equipment Operator – Concrete Specialized FunctionsFamiliar with the latest concrete pouring technology and equipmentDirecting the casting of the concrete with the truck driverPouring, smoothing, and leveling concrete using a rake, trowel, float, and screen.Using specialized handheld tools and power tool versions of float trowel and other concrete tools.Monitoring the effects of the weather on the curing process.Applying sealing and hardening components.Molding and constructing expansion joints using joiners and edging tools.Polishing surfaces using a power surfacing machine.Cleaning and inspecting surfaces for pouring issues.Heavy Equipment Operator – Stormwater Specialized FunctionsTraffic control setup and monitoring.Street sweeping.Construction or cleaning of underground stormwater systems.Grading of open waterways.Construction, repair, or maintenance of stormwater ponds.Operating motor grader, backhoe, mini excavator.Minimum Qualifications:Education, training and Experience GuidelinesHigh school diploma or its equivalent. Two (2) years of full-time work experience performing work that is consistent with the essential and specialized functions for this classification.
OR Any combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Knowledge of:Construction and drainage maintenance and repair.Occupational safety and health regulations, practices, and procedures for area of assignment safety procedures.Routine maintenance and repair techniques for a variety of light and heavy equipment.Skill in:Operating light/heavy machinery and equipment.Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.Reading safety and hazard warnings on equipment and materials.Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.Understanding and following oral and writing instructions.Shooting grades and calculating grades, elevation and drainage fall.Solving construction and repair problems.Preferred Knowledge – Concrete Specialization:Journey level and/or skilled trade work in concrete finishingExperience in traffic controlExperience in concrete or masonryExperience in pouring, placing, smoothing, and leveling concrete using a rake, trowel, float, and screed.Experience in specialized handheld tools and power tool versions of float trowel and other concrete tools.Experience in current practices and procedures for concrete placement and repairExperience in concrete forming or carpentryMonitoring the effects of the weather on the curing process.Skilled in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.Preferred Knowledge – Stormwater Specialization:Experience in stormwater drainage systems construction and or maintenanceExperience in street sweepingExperience in construction or cleaning of underground stormwater systemsExperience in grading of open waterwaysExperience in construction repair or maintenance of stormwater pondsExperience in operations of motor grader, backhoe, mini excavatorSkilled in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.Licenses and Certification RequirementsValid Class "C" Texas driving license.Must have or be able to obtain class A CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit), Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire.Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License Tanker Endorsement (includes air brakes) within nine (9) months of employment.Physical Demands and Working EnvironmentStanding, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Constant exposure to weather extremes, noise and vibration from equipment, moving traffic near work sites.Hiring Range: $21.26 - $26.63, hourly.
