Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Occasional Saturdays: 6:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Waste Connections is seeking a motivated, experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Technician to join our team at Sun Country Materials Landfill in Riverview, FL . This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanic who enjoys working on Yellow Iron and heavy equipment in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.

The ideal candidate will have strong diagnostic and repair skills, experience working on heavy equipment, and a commitment to safety and teamwork. Previous waste industry experience and familiarity with fleet maintenance software are highly preferred.

What You'll Do

  Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of heavy equipment and support vehicles.

  Perform preventative maintenance inspections and scheduled services.

  Repair and maintain:

  Landfill Compactors

  n
n
• n

  Dozers

  n
n
• n

  Excavators

  n
n
• n

  Motor Graders

  n
n
• n

  Haul Trucks

  n
n
• n

  Site Trucks

  n
n
• n

  Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, suspension, brake, and air systems.

  n

• n

  Utilize onboard diagnostic systems and computerized equipment controls.

  n
n
• n

  Respond to equipment breakdowns, including repairs performed in the field and on the working face of the landfill.

  n

• n

  Complete work orders and maintenance records using fleet maintenance software.

  n
n
• n

  Order parts and build strong working relationships with vendors, site personnel, and office staff.

  n
n
• n

  Perform safety inspections and ensure equipment remains operational and compliant.

  n
n
• n

  Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports and complete assigned repairs.

  n
n
• n

  Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

  n
n
• n

  Follow all company, environmental, and OSHA safety policies and procedures.

  n
n
• n

  Effectively communicate repair priorities and equipment needs to management and operations teams.

n

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

n
• n

  Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience

  n
n
• n

  Proven experience working on Yellow Iron/Heavy Equipment

  n
n
• n

  Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities

  n
n
• n

  Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  n
n
• n

  Must provide own tools

  n
n
• n

  Valid driver's license

  n
n
• n

  Ability to safely operate heavy equipment when necessary

  n
n

Preferred Qualifications

• n

  Waste industry experience

  n
n
• n

  Experience with fleet maintenance management software

  n

• n

  Previous field service experience

  n
n
• n

  Welding and fabrication experience a plus

Physical & Working Conditions

• n

  Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry over 50 lbs.

  n

• n

  Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• n

  Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, and working in confined or awkward spaces.

  n

• n

  Work may be performed in a shop environment or directly in the landfill operation.

• n

  Must be comfortable working around heavy equipment and industrial machinery.
