Position Description

The head athletic coach assumes the extra duty of providing coaching leadership in a specified area of the school's athletic program. As a part of that leadership responsibility, the head coach delegates responsibility for specific tasks to the assistant coach(es) and must be a member of the Oklahoma Coach's Association (OCA).

Job Goals

To develop a winning record as a coach and a winning program that results in student athletes who achieve their potential academically, athletically, socially, and morally. Obtain a bus driver's certification (CDL).

Qualifications

The head athletic coach must be employed by Enid Public Schools and must know the policies, rules and eligibility requirements of the specified sport as well as the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association rules. The head athletic coach must have completed prior to coaching any sport: 1) a Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries Course once and 2) the required online training courses every year. The head athletic coach must have the same work day as a high school teacher. Other necessary qualities include the ability to assume delegated responsibilities as directed by the athletic director, the ability to tolerate criticism, the ability to inspire the staff to help carry out the responsibilities assigned, and an attitude that will assume all players an opportunity to be a part of the athletic program.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Accept total responsibility for the specified sports program from grades 7 through 12.
  • Assist the principals and athletic director in selecting assistant coaches for the sport.
  • Report to the athletic director the evaluation of performance of assistant coaches in charge.
  • Provide the athletic director before the season begins:
  1. An eligibility list of players for certification purposes.
  2. A complete schedule of events for the year.
  3. Proof of physicals, Rank One completion, and insurance forms on each player before the player's first date of participation.
  4. Student drug testing consent form.
  5. Sudden cardiac arrest form.
  • Accept responsibility for enrollment, physical conditioning and supervision of players in the sport.
  • Make systematic grade, attendance and behavior checks on players to ensure their eligibility.
  • Supervise athletes during all practices, games and matches and until the building and facilities are locked and secured after the conclusion of an event.
  • Provide the Athletic Director with a list of students who complete the season in good standing.
  • Assist students to be academically eligible to compete in college athletics.
  • Assist student athletes with college recruiting.
  • Submit end of season report with requested information to the Athletic Director and the district's Athletic Office within one week after the conclusion of the season.
  • Work with coaches at other levels and other schools to develop a consistent program in which student athletes try out for teams.
  • Accept responsibility for teaching and exhibiting proper behavior, conduct and decorum on and off the athletic field or court.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and clinics sponsored through the District, OSSAA and/or Oklahoma Coaches Association.
  • Assist in scheduling and ensure team participation in all OSSAA regional events and develop full schedules.
  • Show growth of student athlete participation numbers as directed by the District Director of Athletics.
  • Be responsible for athletic fields and facilities used by the head coach.
  • Demonstrate loyalty to the athletic program.
  • Be present and on time for all events, including practice, unless excused or an emergency arises.
  • Serve through the complete season for one sport before beginning a new one.
  • Ensure that 'Rule 52' is read aloud by the announcer at every home game.
  • Meet several times with the head coach of the sport's middle school feeder school to discuss program and coaching strategies.
  • Designate one home game as 'EPS Elementary/Middle School Night', for which every student wearing an EPS elementary or middle school spirit shirt gets free admission.
