HCSS Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Overview

Competent Clinician. Possesses knowledge and skill to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled in specialty area. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team with interdependent decision-making. Provides patient-centered care, manages unexpected or emergency situations in the assigned specialty population, and serves as a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II. Practices according to the American Nurses Association Standards of Professional Practice and Professional Performance, and aligns with specialty unit, nursing, and health system goals.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document daily patient care, independently and competently.
• Identify patient care needs, formulate diagnoses, develop and individualize care plans, and revise plans as needed.
• Administer physician orders, medications, and treatments; provide culturally congruent and specialty-appropriate care per UTMB policies and standards.
• Perform routine and complex technical procedures in the assigned specialty.
• Provide patient and family teaching and health promotion; use evidence-based resources and teaching strategies (e.g., Teach-Back, AskMe3, return demonstration).
• Coach others in patient/family inclusion and support colleagues with complex learning needs; consider family dynamics in care planning.
• Coordinate and delegate patient care activities; maintain safety and continuity of care through effective handoffs and inter-disciplinary rounds.
• Utilize technology effectively in patient care; troubleshoot and support others as needed.
• Engage in ethics, advocacy, culturally congruent care; act as patient advocate and address ethical situations with appropriate communication.
• Collaborate with inter-professional teams to plan, communicate, and prioritize care; promote a healthy work environment and align with UTMB core values.
• Lead at the unit level as appropriate; mentor colleagues and support professional development.
• Support unit goals, quality improvement, and lifelong learning; participate in meetings, journal clubs, and leadership activities.

Qualifications

• RN with current Texas license or valid permit to practice professional nursing.
• Two (2) years of inpatient hospital experience, with the most recent experience within the last 12 months.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

Required Equipment & Abilities

• Ability to use equipment and supplies for the selected patient population; competence in POCT and related quality requirements; ability to use related computer equipment.

Working Environment

• Indoor work environment with potential exposure to noise, odors, cramped spaces, and fumes.
• Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required (walking, standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, CPR).
• Shift work may be required; must maintain alertness and attention to detail; may be exposed to occupational hazards (e.g., contagious diseases, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents).
