Role Summary

We are seeking an attorney to join our client's compliance team on a short-term basis as Global Trade Compliance Counsel. This role will advise on global trade controls and sanctions and will partner with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure compliance with U.S., EU, and UK regulatory frameworks. The ideal candidate brings sound judgment, excellent communication skills, and a practical approach to complex regulatory questions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and negotiate trade compliance provisions in commercial agreements, including NDAs, with a focus on risk mitigation and operational clarity.
  • Advise on procedures for screening customers, vendors, and counterparties against restricted and denied party lists.
  • Evaluate and approve outbound payments involving higher-risk jurisdictions, ensuring controls align with sanctions considerations.
  • Provide clear, actionable guidance on U.S., EU, and UK trade and sanctions laws and regulations.
  • Advise on deemed export and re-export controls, including technology transfers.
  • Coordinate and respond to Know Your Customer (KYC) and due diligence questionnaires from financial institutions and counterparties.
  • Interpret and apply the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to business operations and transactions.
  • Advise on economic sanctions, embargoes, and related restrictions, including licensing and exceptions.
  • Triage and resolve complex, time-sensitive trade compliance issues, escalating and partnering with stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in trade compliance, export controls, and sanctions within a law firm or in-house environment.
  • Strong knowledge of EAR, ITAR, OFAC sanctions, and relevant EU/UK regimes.
  • Experience with screening tools, internal controls, and escalation frameworks.
  • Exceptional drafting, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
