Geotechnical EngineerThe Geotechnical Engineer supports geotechnical elements of projects across our client's systems through different phases of it, including, but not limited to planning, design and construction phases. This role works closely with the Materials Operation Engineer, our client's Geotechnical Engineer Lead, Other districts DGEs, CEI teams, and project staff to provide timely technical input, support field operations, and help resolve geotechnical issues and emergencies.The position is focused on practical application of geotechnical engineering in both design and construction environment, contributing to quality assurance, risk reduction, and alignment between design intent, applicable codes and standards, and field execution.Core Responsibilities1. Geotechnical Support to DesignReview geotechnical design submittals (plans, reports, calculations) for compliance with standardsProvide comments on shop drawings and geotechnical-related design elements to support constructabilityAssist in review of geotechnical scope elements and identify potential risks or gaps early in designSupport evaluation of cost saving initiatives and alternative technical concepts2.
Construction Support & Field OversightProvide field support during installation of geotechnical elementsAssist CEI staff with interpretation of plans, specs, and geotechnical requirementsParticipate in or support pre-construction and pre-operation meetings to clarify expectationsObserve field activities and identify non-conformance or potential issues3. Testing, Evaluation & DocumentationCoordinate and review geotechnical testing activitiesReview foundation logs, installation records, and certification packages for completeness and accuracyAssist in evaluating test results and supporting recommendations for foundation performance4. Quality Assurance & Issue ResolutionSupport geotechnical QA efforts through field reviews, documentation checks, and coordination with CEIIdentify and help resolve geotechnical issues encountered during constructionAssist in evaluating non-conformance issues and recommending corrective actionsProvide technical input on geotechnical-related claims or disputes5.
Coordination & Program SupportCoordinate with geotechnical subconsultants, testing firms, and laboratoriesInterface with client Materials Office, and project stakeholdersSupport consistent communication across design, construction, and materials teamsContribute to improving geotechnical processes, documentation, and field practicesKey OutputsClear, actionable geotechnical review commentsEvaluated test results with supporting recommendationsField observations and QA documentationTimely technical input that supports design development and construction progress and reduces riskPreferred QualificationsA minimum of 4 years of geotechnical engineering experienceWorking knowledge of geotechnical principles, foundation systems, and soil behaviorFamiliarity with FDOT standards, specifications, and testing proceduresAbility to interpret construction documents and technical dataStrong communication and coordination skills in a field environmentAbility to work independently while supporting a broader team structurePractical problem-solving mindset focused on constructability and risk reductionWork EnvironmentField-based role with frequent travel across project sitesRequired QualificationsBachelor's degreeRequires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.Previous experience with Microsoft Office applications, MicroStation or other software as appropriateExperience with GeoStudio/Ensoft slope stability, settlement, seepage and deep foundation response software, as appropriateExperience with Bentley suite of geotechnical data management and visualization software (gINT/OpenGround/LeapFrog)An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
