Purpose
The purpose of the General Manager I (GM) position is to manage a QSR restaurant or small cluster of restaurants or points-of-sale in close proximity to each other with sales generally up to $5M. The GM ensures the restaurant is clean, staffed, open for business, and operates to high operational and financial standards. The GM uses broad discretion and judgement to make great leadership decisions and is responsible for the overall success of the restaurant.
Essential Functions
Open and Close
Ensures all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening, holding Shift Managers accountable for executing all closing and opening checklists/requirements.
Staffing/Deployment
- Understands, adopts, and consistently demonstrates defined manager behaviors designed to create an environment where employee engagement thrives.
- Deploys staff and resources to maximize profitability within the restaurant and accepts P&L responsibility.
- Assigns work tasks and activities, prepares schedules, and ensures all shifts are covered.
- Provides restaurant staff with consistent support, coaching, and encouragement necessary to achieve business goals.
- Interviews job candidates, makes hiring/termination/advancement decisions for associates, promotes HMSHost as an employer of choice.
- Ensures diversity and inclusion philosophy is understood and executed within the restaurant.
- Ensures on‑boarding and off‑boarding of all restaurant associates, including compliance with badging, orientation, OJT, and other training processes.
- Reads and understands financial and operational data to monitor progress toward unit goals and assigns associates accordingly.
- Recognizes staff contributions and performance using Shout‑Out tools and supports company recognition initiatives.
- Empowers staff with training on Employee Engagement behaviors.
- Maintains up‑to‑date contact information for all associates.
Product Availability/Working Equipment
- Ensures daily orders are prepared and units stocked with appropriate levels of product, teaching associates order procedures.
- Oversees receiving goods, processing invoices, and contacting vendors for supply chain issues/product availability.
- Maintains proficiency in management info systems and tools (MIV, Crunch Time, Kronos, etc.).
- Monitors and maintains restaurant equipment, schedules routine service or repairs as needed.
- Participates in company response to NSF and other audits.
- Minimizes waste, records as needed, and participates in food donation program.
Brand Knowledge/Proficiency
- Assesses skill levels of associates and conducts and coordinates training and education activities.
- Embraces technology and inspires adoption of new technologies implemented by the company.
- Maintains working knowledge of brand standards, CBAs, landlord lease agreements, and all procedures to maximize brand/landlord/labor relations, teaching associates these standards.
- Develops and implements creative strategies to increase revenue.
Visual/Vibe/Appeal
- Manages day‑to‑day activities of associates within individual or group of restaurants or points-of-sale.
- Uses judgment and discretion to resolve customer and associate questions and problems, referring complex issues to senior leaders as needed.
- Utilizes associate strengths and provides ongoing feedback reflecting progress against development goals and business goals.
- Implements marketing programs directed by OSC or brand initiatives, complies with promotional activity, drives revenue, and interacts with support teams for programming.
Safety
- Maintains in‑depth understanding of sanitary, safety, and health standards and relevant procedures.
- Holds managers accountable for ensuring safety standards are understood and followed.
- Trains managers and associates in wellness protocols and adheres to new COVID‑19 requirements.
- Performs all Health and Safety activities as specified in the Manager’s Guide to Associate Health and Safety.
Reporting Relationship and Other Important Information
The GM position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and reports to the Director of Operations or an intermediate zone, cluster, or area leader. The position requires a varied, rotating schedule and on‑site presence at various operating days and hours each week.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment
- 3+ years of restaurant P&L management experience with 5‑7 years overall in similar complexity restaurant types.
- Graduation from a Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute part of the experience.
- Demonstrated team management, delegation, issue resolution, and multi‑priority ability.
- Knowledge of HMSHost policies and products, service, quality, equipment, and operations standards.
- Strong communication skills and ability to converse comfortably with individuals.
