Overview
The General Manager is responsible for driving hotel profitability through revenue generation, cost control, guest satisfaction, and employee development while maintaining the integrity of the property for the Select Service Division.
Responsibilities
- Tour operating departments daily, adjusting processes as needed through department heads.
- Conduct weekly staff meetings and training sessions, reviewing sales and operations efforts.
- Meet all financial review dates and corporate‑directed programs on time.
- Hold monthly financial reviews with all department managers, M.I.D.s, and available supervisors.
- Ensure department heads maintain budgeted productivity and adhere to Highgate Hotel standard checkbook accounting procedures.
- Develop managers for future advancement through competency and corporate training programs.
- With the Director of Sales, conduct daily HHBR meetings focusing on prospecting calls and potential business results.
- Play a pivotal role in hotel sales efforts, including calling on top ten accounts, meeting clients, hosting luncheons and receptions, and daily visits to on‑site contacts.
- Participate in required M.O.D. coverage as scheduled.
- Maintain direct contact with and monitor the development of management trainees.
- Adhere to all Highgate Hotel policies and procedure and train new managers for compliance.
- Assist in the Highgate Hotel budget process as required.
- Ensure training in service standards is occurring in each department and maintain compliance with Highgate Hotel Garden Standard of the Week training.
- Assist in creating a positive, guest‑focused team environment through employee development and motivation.
- Inspect rooms regularly (weekly at a minimum) with both the Housekeeping Manager and Property Engineer.
- Ensure complete processing of invoices daily using the A/P process.
- Submit all appropriate information for financial documents to the Corporate Office monthly, per the accounting calendar.
- Maintain the cleanliness and maintenance of the property through inspections and preventive maintenance programs with department managers.
- Ensure employees are consistently courteous and responsive to guests and colleagues.
- Forecast the hotel’s financial position monthly, estimating revenues and line‑by‑line expenses, and analyze data for accurate reforecasting.
- Prepare and conduct all management interviews and hiring procedures according to Highgate Hotel S.O.P.s, ensuring compliance.
- Interview all prospective final candidates for vacant management positions before any offer is extended.
- Perform Executive Committee performance appraisals per Highgate Hotel S.O.P.s, ensuring standard administration.
- Motivate, coach, counsel, and discipline all management personnel per Highgate Hotel S.O.P.s.
- Perform any other duties as requested by the Vice President or Regional Director of Operations.
- Ensure equitable treatment of all employees per Highgate Hotel S.O.P.s.
- Meet clients on the property, including touring contacts and potential clients to support sales efforts.
- Be present in the public areas during peak times, greeting guests and offering assistance.
- Handle hotel safe procedures and security audits as required.
- Conduct monthly credit meetings and contribute to hotel credit and collection policies.
- Complete required corporate training modules and certify to train others as needed.
- Ensure all scheduled meetings occur on the property.
Qualifications
- At least 6 years of progressive hotel experience, or a 4‑year college degree with 4–5 years of related experience, or a 2‑year college degree with 5–6 years of related experience.
- Light work: Able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently or constantly.
- Maintain a warm, friendly demeanor at all times.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and guests.
- Demonstrate active listening and problem‑identification skills.
- Multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
- Approach all guest and employee interactions in an attentive, friendly, courteous, and service‑oriented manner.
- Attend all hotel‑required meetings and trainings.
- Participate in M.O.D. coverage as required.
- Maintain regular attendance per Highgate Hotel Standards.
- Maintain high personal appearance and grooming standards, including wearing nametags.
- Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Handle problems effectively: anticipate, prevent, identify, and solve as needed.
