The General Manager is responsible for continually focusing on achieving hotel profitability through revenue generation, cost control, guest satisfaction and developing employees, while maintaining the integrity of the hotel for the Select Service Division.

Responsibilities

  • Tour the operating departments daily, making adjustments as needed via department heads.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings, including weekly training sessions presented by managers and self using the steps to effective training according to Highgate Hotel standards, and review of previous and future sales and operations efforts.
  • Meet all financial review dates and corporate directed programs in a timely fashion.
  • Hold a monthly financial review with all department managers, M.I.D.'s and available supervisors.
  • Ensure that all department heads maintain budgeted productivity levels and Highgate Hotel standard checkbook accounting procedures.
  • Develop managers for future advancement through competency training and corporate sponsored training programs.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Sales, conduct a daily HHBR meeting focusing on prospecting and account activity and potential business results.
  • Play a pivotal role in hotel sales efforts, including calling on top accounts, meeting clients, hosting luncheons and receptions, and meeting with on-site contacts regularly.
  • Participate in required M.O.D. coverage as scheduled.
  • Maintain direct contact with and monitor the development of management trainees.
  • Adhere to all Highgate Hotel policies and procedures and train new managers to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee and assist in the Highgate Hotel budget process as required.
  • Ensure training in service standards is taking place in each department using Highgate Hotel standards, including compliance with Garden Standard of the Week training.
  • Assist in creating a positive team-oriented environment focused on guest service through employee development and motivation.
  • Inspect rooms regularly (weekly at a minimum) with the Housekeeping Manager and Property Engineer.
  • Ensure complete processing of invoices daily via accounts payable processes.
  • Ensure information for financial documents is received by the Corporate Office monthly, in compliance with the monthly accounting calendar.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of the physical property through inspections and preventive maintenance programs with department managers.
  • Ensure employees are attentive, friendly, courteous and efficient in interactions with guests, managers and all staff.
  • Forecast monthly the hotel's financial position, by estimating revenues and expenses, and analyze data to generate accurate forecasts.
  • Prepare and conduct management interviews and hire staff in accordance with SOPs; ensure compliance with interviewing and hiring standards for departmental staff.
  • Interview final candidates for vacant management positions prior to offers, and perform Executive Committee member performance appraisals per SOPs.
  • Motivate, coach, counsel and discipline management personnel according to SOPs and ensure compliance with counseling and disciplinary standards.
  • Perform other duties as requested by leadership and ensure fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Be present in public areas during peak times to assist guests and meet clients onsite as needed.
  • Ensure security procedures for hotel safes and monthly audits are followed and conducted.
  • Participate in monthly credit meetings and support hotel credit and collection policies.
  • Complete required corporate training modules and become certified to train those as required.
  • Ensure that all scheduled meetings take place on the property.

Qualifications

  • At least 6 years progressive experience in a hotel or related field; or a 4-year degree with 4–5 years of related experience; or a 2-year degree with 5–6 years of related experience.
  • Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently to move objects.
  • Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with all levels of employees and guests.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and address concerns from employees and guests.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
  • Approach all encounters with guests and employees in a courteous and service-oriented manner.
  • Attend all required hotel meetings and trainings and participate in MOD coverage as needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance in compliance with hotel standards; vary schedule as needed.
  • Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including wearing nametags.
  • Comply with hotel standards and regulations to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Effective problem-solving, with the ability to anticipate, prevent, identify and resolve issues.
  • Ability to understand and evaluate complex information from various sources to meet objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
