General Manager, Excavation

Position Summary

Onyx is seeking an experienced General Manager, Excavation to lead our Excavation Division. This senior leadership role is responsible for safety, operations, people, customer relationships, financial performance, and overall divisional results. The ideal candidate is a hands-on construction leader who can build strong teams, drive accountability, support profitable growth, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.

Position Summary

Onyx is seeking an experienced General Manager, Excavation to lead our Excavation Division. This senior leadership role is responsible for safety, operations, people, customer relationships, financial performance, and overall divisional results. The ideal candidate is a hands-on construction leader who can build strong teams, drive accountability, support profitable growth, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the Excavation Division’s business plan, budget, staffing, operating priorities, and performance goals.
• Manage divisional financial performance, including revenue, margins, overhead, forecasting, backlog, and profit-and-loss results.
• Partner with estimating and executive leadership on bid strategy, customer relationships, contract terms, and pursuit priorities.
• Oversee excavation projects from estimating through completion, ensuring proper staffing, scheduling, equipment planning, safety, quality, and contract compliance.
• Develop and support project management, field operations, estimating, and supervisory teams while fostering accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Champion safety, compliance, and operational excellence across all excavation work.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, subcontractors, vendors, partners, and internal departments.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of progressive experience in excavation, heavy civil, site development, underground utility, or related construction work.
• Senior leadership experience managing a significant project portfolio, business unit, or large construction team.
• Strong financial management experience, including P&L ownership, forecasting, WIP review, job costs, budgets, change management, and profitability.
• Strong understanding of excavation operations, estimating, project management, scheduling, production planning, construction safety, and compliance.
• Proven ability to lead through others, build strong teams, manage customer relationships, solve problems, and make sound business decisions.
• Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite, HCSS or similar construction management software, and ERP systems such as Sage, Viewpoint Vista.

Work Environment

• Frequent travel to construction sites, customer meetings, and company locations.
• Work in both office and outdoor construction environments, including active job sites and uneven terrain.
• Flexibility to meet project and operational demands.
