Summary
The General Manager of operations is a highly visible leadership role. This individual is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, operation, compliance, and financial results for a designated operation. The General Manager (GM) will serve as a primary client interface for all leadership decisions regarding proposal approval and contract negotiations. This role is the champion of overseeing local continuous improvement activities, LEAN practices, supply chain analysis, Six Sigma initiatives, and ISO activities. The GM will also develop marketing plans and assist in growing new business. He/she will ensure that the operation adheres to the overall corporate mission, vision, and core values while consistently meeting client and company expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations
- Accountable for overseeing manpower, recruiting, retention, and development of people for the operation.
- Ensures procedures exist at all sites to guarantee client service, productivity, and facilities and equipment maintenance.
- Sets goals to provide continuous improvement for assigned site.
Safety
- Responsible for the overall safety and security of assigned operations and staff.
- Maintain positive IFR statistics and other safety metrics.
- Actively support and oversee site safety programs and committees.
- Work in conjunction with company and client safety resources to ensure best practices are in place and updated to meet compliance standards with OSHA, DOT, or other relevant regulatory agencies.
Labor Management
- Develop teams to achieve company and client objectives.
- Train and educate management to ensure service requirements are met and exceeded.
- Communicate the mission, vision, and core values to motivate direct reports.
- Actively support and practice mentoring, succession planning, and management development activities at the site level.
Management Information System
- Proactively develop plans and capital requests to ensure appropriate level of automation and technology to service the client.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and latest WMS technology.
Budgeting
- Partner with senior leadership to develop and recommend annual operating budget.
- Develop and manage a system of controls to ensure service levels and operational performance goals are met within prescribed cost, revenue, and profit parameters.
- Ensure all accounts achieve predetermined profit standards.
Customer Service
- Act as site-level champion of client relationship management.
- Assist in setting standards appropriate to client and scope of work.
- Implement and monitor KPIs for assigned operation.
- Coordinate and lead business reviews with appropriate client and company representatives for each reporting operation.
Miscellaneous
- Participate in local trade, professional, and civic associations as a representative of the company.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Responsible for Operations Managers, Supervisors and other leadership roles as assigned for the specific operation.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Budgeting and P&L management experience required.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an operations management related position.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4‑Year College Degree preferred; equivalent experience or combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Prefer 5 years’ experience in a leadership role in a logistics/distribution/supply‑chain environment.
- Varied industry vertical experience is preferred.
- 3PL management experience strongly preferred.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, reach, and climb up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to stand for several hours per day.
- Must be able to travel by plane and/or automobile.
- Specific vision requirements include close vision and distance vision; uses computer and telephone equipment.
Work Environment
- Normal warehouse conditions; exposure to changing temperatures possible.
- Rare exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Noise level is usually low to moderate.
Other Information
- Travel may be required, determined by business needs.
Compensation
Expected base pay range is $140,000.00 – $160,000.00. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
