General Education Teacher - Pathway To Special Education Teacher
Urbana School District #116 is seeking a General Education Teacher with the potential to transition into a Special Education Teacher role. The position is based in a building to be determined and reports to the Building Administrator, Executive Director of Student Services, and Special Education Administrator. The selected candidate will supervise teaching assistants.
Candidates must complete the Short-Term Approval process and will initially fill a Special Education position as a Long-Term Substitute before transitioning to a full-time teacher under the Short Term Licensure.
Responsibilities include:
- Applying to National Louis University and sending transcripts for degrees earned.
- Registering for required courses for Short-Term Approval.
- Successfully completing online coursework.
- Teaching as a Long-Term Substitute while completing initial coursework.
- Teaching as a Special Education Teacher under Short-Term Approval while earning the full LBSI endorsement.
- Teaching as a Special Education Teacher after completing the LBSI endorsement.
University fees for all four courses at National Louis (or equivalent program) will be covered by USD #116. An agreement to teach in Special Education at USD #116 must be signed.
Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher provides high quality instruction, consultation, and services through a structured environment that supports student growth. Collaboration with general education staff, related service personnel, and parents is essential.
Essential Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, including:
- Collaborating with staff, parents, and teaching assistants.
- Coordinating the IEP process.
- Assessing students' performance.
- Designing clear and relevant instruction.
- Establishing a positive learning environment.
- Providing direct instruction.
- Monitoring progress.
- Consulting and collaborating with staff.
- Training and supervising teaching assistants.
- Maintaining communication with parents.
- Participating in professional development.
- Providing support for students requiring physical assistance.
- Participating in special activities.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education and experience in special education are required. Other skills include being highly organized, having excellent communication and collaboration skills, and being an excellent problem solver.
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Terms of Employment: 185-day contract, UEA membership eligible, daily rate as a Long Term Substitute Teacher, and salary schedule placement.
Evaluation: To be completed by the building administrator or district special education administrator.
Note: This is not an administrative position. This position is exempt. Pay is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
