General Counsel

The Illinois Municipal League (IML) is seeking a full-time, in-house General Counsel to provide senior level leadership and legal guidance over the legal department of the organization.

IML was founded in 1913 and has worked continuously for the benefit of all municipalities throughout Illinois. The governing board is comprised of mayors, village presidents and town presidents, with day-to-day administration under the authority of an executive director.

The General Counsel provides:

• supervision over a Legal Bulletin published monthly;
• manages numerous publications;
• coordinates and attends educational seminars for members;
• advises the board of directors and executive director on legal matters;
• facilitates regular group meetings with municipal attorneys;
• prepares and files legislative testimony and legal briefs;
• responds to inquiries from municipal officials and attorneys regarding timely issues;
• develops strategies on litigation; and,
• assists with other duties as assigned from time to time.

Occasional out of town and/or overnight travel is required.

The successful applicant:

• shall be fully licensed to practice law in Illinois, with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited college of law;
• must not be permanently prohibited from being a registered lobbyist by the State of Illinois;
• have excellent organizational and communications skills; and,
• have a minimum of five years’ experience.

Preference may be given to applicants with municipal law or lobbying experience, or applicants who have served in a similar position for an Illinois municipality and/or state agency.

IML offers a competitive salary ($175,000-$225,000) and benefits package.
