Overview

Next150 Construction is seeking a motivated General Construction Superintendent to be responsible for the overall execution of Next 150 field operations on a large or complex project. The role requires coordinating closely with Gilbane field leadership and superintendents while leading a team of superintendents and field supervision to ensure all work is performed in accordance with approved scope, safety requirements, quality standards, schedule commitments, budget expectations, and customer satisfaction objectives. The superintendent will provide direct project-level leadership and oversight across multiple scopes and phases of preconstruction and construction, ensuring operational excellence, workforce coordination, and disciplined execution.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the day-to-day coordination of Next 150 field operations, trade contractors, and subcontractors results in safe, high-quality work that meets the approved project schedule and scope.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage superintendents, foremen, and field staff to deliver consistent, high-performing results in accordance with Next 150 and Gilbane standards.
  • Review and manage the General Conditions and Site Services budgets, ensuring alignment with project expectations and approved cost-of-work projections.
  • Develop, document, and communicate approved work plans and ensure all changes in the field are properly reviewed, documented, safety planned, and authorized prior to execution.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of contract documents, specifications, and coordination requirements to plan work proactively and anticipate potential issues.
  • Obtain or verify that all required permits, inspections, and compliance documentation are secured and maintained for assigned scopes.
  • Verify safety compliance across all trades and field operations, act as the primary Next 150 safety authority on the project, and enforce applicable OSHA, Gilbane, and Next 150 policies.
  • Enforce and audit quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure consistent workmanship and compliance with project requirements.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance activities, work-arounds, shutdowns, and tie-ins to support safe, efficient, and high-quality execution.
  • Establish and maintain credibility with owners, Gilbane leadership, trade contractors, unions, and field personnel through fair, professional, and consistent leadership.
  • Align workforce availability with operational and schedule needs in coordination with leadership.
  • Lead contractor meetings as required and oversee daily field reporting, safety documentation, and records using required construction management systems.
  • Create, manage, and update project schedules and implement contingency plans as necessary to maintain project milestones; communicate schedule status, updates, risks, and changes to the project team and trade contractors.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage jobsite logistics, including access, material flow, temporary facilities, and operational sequencing; oversee the project quality plan and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Execute and support self‑perform operations, workforce planning, and quantification of labor, materials, and equipment needs.
  • Forecast labor and equipment requirements and support cost-of-work projections in coordination with project leadership; collaborate with applicable teams to align labor, equipment, and material resources.
  • Recruit, develop, lead onboarding and performance management, and retain field talent across self‑perform and site logistics functions.
  • Promote a culture of learning, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Train direct reports on processes, procedures, and completion of daily tasks; support the development of project teams.
  • Manage workload and performance of direct reports, ensuring alignment with overall company standards; track production and productivity metrics to support performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment to motivate and engage team members.
  • Aid in communicating company and department strategy to direct reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 10‑15 years of experience on a $15‑50+ million commercial/industrial construction project or multiple projects in a superintendent role.
  • OSHA 30‑hour certification.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to supervise a project team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction management software.
  • Knowledge of construction‑documenting and drawing, with knowledge of all phases of construction.
  • Knowledge in all divisions of work, methods, materials, scheduling, and cost control.
  • Strong knowledge and appreciation of construction safety processes and ability to enforce the project safety plan.
  • Ability to create an environment where safety first is the culture and all tradespeople work with an incident‑free and injury‑free attitude.

Salary & Benefits

Salary to be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience of the applicant, as well as internal equity and alignment with the team. For Chicago, IL, this ranges from $136,000 – $175,000 plus benefits and a retirement program.
