Schedule: Generally Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The position may include shared call, weekend coverage, and rotation among VA Northern California locations depending on operational needs.
Important: This is a contingent recruiting opportunity associated with a pending federal contract award. Employment or placement is subject to contract award, final compensation agreement, credentialing, privileging, background requirements, and approval by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Position Overview
We are recruiting qualified gastroenterologists for anticipated positions supporting the VA Northern California Health Care System. The selected physician will provide comprehensive gastroenterology services to veterans, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, endoscopic procedures, electronic medical record documentation, and participation in quality-improvement activities.
The current requirement includes two gastroenterologist positions supporting the Sacramento VA Medical Center in Mather, California.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide independent care for patients with general and chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
- Conduct patient histories, physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and treatment planning.
- Perform routine diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy procedures.
- Perform complex or advanced procedures when consistent with the physician’s training, experience, credentialing, and privileges.
- Review diagnostic testing and coordinate care with appropriate clinical services.
- Document patient care accurately and timely in VA electronic health-record systems.
- Support telehealth services, including VA Video Connect.
- Participate in quality assurance, process improvement, medical staff activities, and department initiatives.
- Assist with clinic and procedure scheduling, patient throughput, and coverage planning when assigned.
- Supervise or teach gastroenterology fellows when required by the clinical assignment.
- Maintain compliance with applicable VA, federal, state, privacy, safety, and infection-control requirements.

Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.
- Completion of accredited Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training.
- Current, unrestricted medical license acceptable for federal credentialing.
- Demonstrated experience providing gastroenterology care.
- Ability to perform routine upper and lower endoscopic procedures.
- Ability to satisfy applicable VA credentialing and privileging requirements.
- Ability to comply with federal background, privacy, patient-safety, and medical-record requirements.
- Current BLS and/or ACLS credentials as required for the assignment.
The contractor must ensure candidates possess all licenses, accreditation, and certifications required by the applicable scope of practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Board certification or board eligibility in Gastroenterology.
- Experience in a hospital, federal healthcare, academic, or integrated health-system environment.
- Experience supervising or teaching fellows.
- Experience with telehealth.
- Experience with CPRS, VistA, or similar electronic medical-record systems.
- Experience with quality assurance or process-improvement programs.
- Advanced endoscopy skills appropriate to the physician’s training and privileges.
