Fleet MechanicThe Town of West Point Public Works Department is looking for an experienced, self-motivated and dependable individual to serve as our Fleet Mechanic. The right individual will perform preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and troubleshoot mechanical parts on any and all types of machinery within the department. Work a Monday - Friday schedule with weekends off!Benefits:Paid Employee Health/Dental InsuranceVirginia Retirement System (VRS) membershipPaid Group Life InsurancePaid Vacation and Sick LeaveUp to 14 Paid Holidays (follow the State calendar)Starting Salary: $ ($21.70 p/hour) (Salary Range: ) Grade: 15 OR HIGHER Dependent on ExperienceEssential Functions:Inspects vehicles to determine the nature and extent of problemDevelops and executes task schedules accordinglyRemoving and disassembling units such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and pumps to inspect for wear and make necessary repairsRepairing, overhauling, or replacing parts, such as pistons, rods, valves, carburetors, bearings, distributors, shock absorbers, and exhaust systemsUses a vast variety of specialty tools and diagnostic equipmentDetects and reports defective materials and dangerous conditions to the appropriate personnelInstructs and trains other crew members in procedures and safety requirementsOperates vehicles and equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, skid-steering loader, trailerOperates power equipment such as mowers, brush chippers, trimmers, and snow blowerUses tools such as hammer, axe, wrench, screwdriver, and levelPerforms prescribed preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools as required; cleans and maintains equipment in good working conditionReads and interprets equipment manuals to perform required maintenance and serviceMay provide input into employee performance evaluations prepared by the Director, Public Works DepartmentMinimum Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus minimum of two years' experience in public works or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of basic tools and equipmentKnowledge and use of safety precautions and equipment including reflective vest, steel-toed boots, lifting belt, eye protection, ear protection, glovesBasic knowledge of mechanical skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and routine equipment repairsAbility to deal courteously and effectively with the public Licenses or Certifications: Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License required after six months
