Field Technician / Equipment Operator

This role combines hands-on heavy equipment operation with basic mechanical maintenance as a field technician and equipment operator. You will split your time between a shop environment in Northampton, PA and an industrial client site in Morgantown, PA, learning to operate specialized equipment using joystick controls and performing routine upkeep and troubleshooting. After an initial period working between both locations, the position transitions into a permanent role at the Morgantown site.

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently, including specialized machinery such as the GEF 530 KT Grant, using joystick controls in an outdoor environment.
  • Work 2–3 days per week in the shop in Northampton, PA and 2–3 days per week at the client site in Morgantown, PA during the initial training and transition period.
  • Follow established start times, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the shop and variable start times of 8:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. at the client site, depending on operational needs.
  • Perform basic mechanical maintenance on equipment, including inspections, minor repairs, and adjustments to keep machinery in safe working condition.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues on site, identify potential causes of malfunctions, and communicate repair needs or solutions to the appropriate team members.
  • Apply prior heavy equipment operating experience to quickly learn and adapt to unique equipment controls and operating procedures.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while working in hot, dirty, and dusty conditions, maintaining situational awareness and safe work practices at all times.
  • Support excavation and construction-related activities by operating excavators, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Collaborate with shop and field personnel to coordinate equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and daily work plans.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in both the shop and field settings, ensuring tools and equipment are stored and handled properly.
Essential Skills
  • Proven heavy equipment operating experience, including familiarity with skid steers, backhoes, front loaders, excavators, dozers, and similar machinery.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic maintenance and minor repairs on heavy equipment.
  • Comfort using joystick-style controls and the ability to learn unique equipment operation through provided training.
  • Willingness and ability to work in hot, dirty, and dusty outdoor environments on a regular basis.
  • Flexibility to travel between Northampton, PA and Morgantown, PA and work at both the shop and client site as required.
  • Reliability in adhering to set start times and adjusting to variable schedules at the client site.
  • Attention to safety and adherence to operational procedures in both shop and field settings.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment operation issues and communicate findings clearly to colleagues.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience operating track hoes, front end loaders, and other construction-related heavy equipment.
  • Background in excavation or construction environments where heavy equipment operation is a core responsibility.
  • Prior experience in a technician / operator role combining equipment operation with mechanical duties.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in the field.
  • Capacity to work extended hours when needed, including overtime and weekend shifts.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Northampton, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
