Data Center Optical Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Optical Engineer to support customer data center and co-location environments. This role is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of optical transport infrastructure while ensuring high-quality execution across all assigned activities. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical professional with experience leading field activities, maintaining quality standards, and working directly with customers in mission-critical data center environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support optical infrastructure activities within customer data centers and co-location facilities.
  • Conduct daily quality audits of field work and provide feedback to field technicians.
  • Communicate directly with customers through ticketing systems and in person, providing timely project updates and technical reports.
  • Perform and/or supervise:
    • Fiber installation
    • Fiber decommissioning
    • Break/Fix activities
    • Network remediation
    • Fiber migrations
  • Perform and/or supervise optical testing and troubleshooting using:
    • Optical Power Meters
    • Stabilized Light Sources
    • Visual Fault Locators (VFL)
    • Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR)
    • Optical Test Sets
  • Interpret and execute:
    • Methods of Procedure (MoPs)
    • Engineering documentation
    • Vendor documentation
    • Network diagrams
  • Read and interpret cut sheets and physical network design documents to ensure accurate cable routing, port connections, and cable management.
  • Maintain high standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3–15 years of experience in data center operations or a similar technical environment with direct customer interaction.
  • Previous experience leading technical teams or field activities.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and customer ticketing/documentation tools.
  • Strong hands-on experience with connectorized fiber optic cabling, including:
    • Single-mode fiber
    • Multi-mode fiber
    • LC connectors
    • Fan-outs
    • Structured cabling systems
  • Demonstrated experience performing optical testing and transport troubleshooting.
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in fast-paced, high-availability environments.
  • Strong commitment to safety procedures, quality standards, and industry best practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working at heights when required.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions commonly found in data center environments.

Equipment & Work Requirements:

  • Ability to support on-site assignments with short notice as business needs require.
  • Availability to meet established service-level expectations for customer support.
  • Ability to utilize standard communication devices, computer equipment, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for the role.
