Faculty, Bioethics and Professionalism
School of Medicine, Mercer University – Macon, GA 31207
Responsibilities
- Base primarily in Macon, teaching on all three campuses (Macon, Savannah, Columbus) both virtually and physically.
- Collaborate with the Chair and departmental faculty to design and implement an integrated ethics and humanities curriculum for pre‑clinical and clerkship years.
- Employ pedagogical methods such as Team Based Learning and Problem Based Learning in course delivery.
- Participate in special programs, including faculty development in ethics education, teaching and grand rounds at affiliated medical centers, and sponsoring student projects and research in bioethics and medical humanities.
- Engage in faculty committee participation and support the four‑year certificate program in bioethics and medical humanities.
- Perform additional duties during the summer as assigned.
Qualifications
- Hold a terminal degree (PhD, JD, DBe, MD, DO, or equivalent) from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline.
- Demonstrated training in ethics consultation.
- Commitment to the mission of Mercer University School of Medicine.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Associate Professor or Associate Professor‑eligible.
- Preferred: Experience in the care of rural and underserved populations.
- Preferred: Record of scholarship and teaching in undergraduate medical education.
- Preferred: Certification as a Clinical Ethics Consultant (HEC‑C).
- Ideal candidate experience: independently developing learning resources and assessment items; leading large‑group interactive learning sessions; facilitating small‑group interdisciplinary case‑based learning.
Additional Expectations
Faculty are expected to participate broadly across the medical and graduate curricula, engage in scholarship in bioethics and medical humanities, and collaborate with the law, nursing, pharmacy, and theology schools.
