EXPERT INSTRUCTIONAL AID (EIA)
SHORT TERM - UP TO 28 HRS PER WEEK
Please note that this is a short-term, temporary position that is filled on an as-needed basis. Applications will be reviewed only when there is an active staffing need.
EIA's are valuable members of the training staff supporting primary instructors and can fulfill a variety of specialized roles assisting students in which a degree is not required. Their primary role is to support classroom instruction and facilitate student learning outcomes.
EIA's with the required skills, training and physical ability may function as a primary skills Instructor for identified skills courses, such as Driver Awareness, Firearms, Arrest and Control, etc.
EIA's may also serve as a Recruit Training Officer (RTO) at the College of the Siskiyous Law Enforcement Academy, in accordance current Peace Officer Standards and Training / POST requirements. The RTO role is primarily an administrative function with direct oversite of Cadets.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
EIA's monitor instruction to ensure POST regulations and standards are met; mentors and assists in advising Academy trainees; serves as a role model for trainees. Conducts uniform inspections / roll call, reviews reports, initiates progressive discipline, and fulfills various administrative functions.
Job responsibilities and knowledge
  1. Monitors day-to-day instruction to ensure conformance with state legislative mandates and the regulations/procedures of the Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training; assists instructors in class preparations; ensures staff-to-student ratios are maintained and takes appropriate follow-up action to resolve problems and issues in order to meet student training needs.
  2. Monitors and evaluates trainee performance and behaviors as provided for in the Academy POST Procedures Manuals; provides feedback to trainees and faculty; advises students; recommends improvement plans for student in Academic and physical performance and/or conduct; with faculty approval, provides tutoring assistance.
  3. Serves as a role model for trainees in demonstrating professional conduct, leadership, responsibility, job knowledge and integrity; works with students to provide support, encouragement and motivation.
  4. Works with Academy Supervisors, Academy Trainers, and College faculty to ensure the physical safety of trainees during instruction; takes appropriate emergency action in the event students are hurt or distressed during training.
  5. May proctor POST Learning Domain tests, Academy spelling and codes quizzes to ensure the integrity of the testing process.
  6. Maintain and updates student records including assignments, tests, evaluations, inspections, discipline and other academy-related matters.

  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships within the organization based on experience and feedback obtained.

  • Ability to deliver educational presentations applying principles of adult learning.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with other employees, supervisors and external parties.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged information gained as result of position functions.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • Completion of a POST certified Academy
  • Must posses/or have possessed a POST Basic Certificate in good standing
Experience:
  • Minimum one (1) year of Patrol Experience

Other Details
Physical demands/working conditions :
Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Work is performed in a variety of settings to include classroom, field, emergency department and office environment.
