Job Overview

The Advanced Practitioner (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) is responsible for providing healthcare services to patients in the ED/Urgent Care setting under the supervision of a physician. The role includes medical evaluation, treatment, counseling, and referrals, as well as participation in quality and performance improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and treat patients presenting for care, obtaining history, performing physical examination, documenting medical records, and providing discharge instructions.
  • Order, prescribe, or administer medications, IV fluids, and perform privileged procedures in accordance with Pennsylvania State Practice Act and hospital bylaws.
  • Initiate and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests, and manage patient care plans based on findings.
  • Perform privileged procedures such as visual screening, IM/IV SQ medication administration, local anesthesia, Foley catheter insertion, venipuncture, IV line insertion, removal of foreign bodies, intra‑articular aspiration/injection, splint placement, dressings, wound care, incision and drainage, laceration repair, sutures removal, ear irrigation, and ophthalmic tests.
  • Conduct virtual care services through St. Luke’s virtual care platform when requested.
  • Participate in educational activities, including teaching multidisciplinary students, precepting AP students, and contributing to clinical guidelines and research.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, publications, professional societies, and continuing medical education.
  • Provide occupational health services in the urgent care setting, such as pre‑employment physicals and injury care.

Qualifications

  • Board‑eligible or board‑certified Registered Nurse Practitioner or Medical Physician Assistant with current license in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.
  • Physician Assistants must hold a current NCCPA certification.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in an ED or urgent care setting.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Experience with suturing and other surgical procedures listed above.
  • Ability to treat patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly.
