Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced executive‑level underwriter to help build out our E&S Primary & Excess product lines. Successful candidates must produce and manage a profitable book of business through a wholesale‑only, limited distribution model.
- Select, price, quote and review new & renewal business in accordance with company underwriting guidelines and experienced, underwriting judgment.
- Independently work with wholesale distribution channels to appropriately select risks, evaluate, and recommend program structure, services, and pricing to achieve a balanced portfolio and long‑term profitability.
- Identify, develop, and maintain strong business relationships to drive consistent opportunities for new business placement, as well as retain existing accounts.
- Present & defend book dynamics/profile in reinsurance treaty meetings.
- Utilize facultative relationships/capacity to maintain prescribed net positions with the Palomar E&S portfolio.
- Be well‑versed in underwriting Primary and Excess Construction and/or Excess Non‑construction risks in the E&S space.
- Evaluate reinsurance requirements and implement appropriate action, including treaty adherence and facultative solutions.
- Assist in the mentoring/coaching of junior underwriters.
- Share industry‑specific knowledge with underwriters of all levels while performing as a technical underwriting resource.
- As a unit leader, set the example of expected performance by producing new business in addition to the required product management duties.
- Actively continue to improve personal knowledge and practices of the insurance industry through work experience, in‑house instruction, insurance‑specific designations (e.g., CPCU), industry courses, home office seminars and workshops, etc.
- Assist in the Junior Underwriter mentoring process.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of insurance experience specifically underwriting in the E&S environment.
- CPCU and/or ARM professional insurance designation strongly preferred.
- Entrepreneurial spirit and not risk‑averse.
- Ability to think outside the box.
- Good at establishing and building functional working relationships.
- Results‑oriented with initiative to support the team.
- Ability to learn and work in various technical platforms quickly.
- Professional, analytical, and adaptable attitude.
- Willing to travel nationally for reinsurance and wholesale partner development.

Pay Range
$175,000 - $250,000 + Bonus Potential & Participation in our Competitive Long‑Term Incentive (LTI) Program.
The above pay range is for all US‑based roles based on function and level, benchmarked against companies of similar size and scope. To be compliant with local legislation as well as provide greater transparency to candidates, we disclose salary ranges on all job postings regardless of the desired job location. We also offer a competitive annual discretionary bonus program and the opportunity for annual long‑term incentive stock grants. In addition, we offer a highly competitive benefits package. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and qualifications, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
