Qualifications
- Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent (may sign GED agreement to obtain within 6 months).
- Required: Current RN license in Kentucky or work permit issued by KBN (licensure in compact state acceptable).
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
- Associate's degree in nursing.
- Preferred: BSN.
- Experience: N/A.
- Other Requirements or Licensure: BLS provider or equivalent knowledge; ACLS provider or obtain within 6 months of employment; PALS provider certified strongly recommended; Basic keyboarding skills.

Physical Demands & Working Environment
Usual working space is a well‑ventilated area. Requires standing, walking, turning, bending, stooping, and lifting. Clear speech to communicate effectively with patients, families, and other team members. Fine and gross motor skills. May be stressful at times, therefore ability to work under stressful conditions is necessary. Lifting up to 50 lbs may be required; anything over 50 lbs should be a team lift or with use of a lifting aid. Also subject to bloodborne pathogens at all times in patient care. May have occasional exposure to radiation during radiology procedures and to dangerous chemicals (cleaning and disinfecting agents).

Essential Job Functions & Key Responsibilities
Assess and Diagnose Nursing Care Needs
- Prioritize data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition.
- Collect pertinent assessment data using appropriate techniques (interview, observation, inspection, palpation, review of reports and records).
- Validate patient problems and involve client, significant others, family and health care providers as appropriate.
Prescribe, Delegate, Supervise, and Evaluate Patient Care
- Plan nursing interventions reflecting current practice and documented on the record.
- Delegate responsibility according to support staff education, orientation, experience and scope of practice as mandated by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Reassess at appropriate intervals; document patient response to interventions.
- Provide concise reports to receiving unit during transfers.
- Accurately transcribe and implement medical orders; ensure communication to all affected staff.
- Demonstrate knowledge of sterile/aseptic techniques and recognize cardiac arrhythmias, following appropriate treatment protocols.
- Demonstrate skills in all patient procedures and pain management.
Teaching
- Identify learning needs of self and others; assist in development and implementation of learning opportunities.
- Provide on‑spot coaching to personnel observed in unacceptable behavior, in a constructive and private manner.
- Determine patient learning needs and provide teaching or appropriate referral; use suitable teaching methods and materials.
- Document instruction content and patient response in the medical record.
Maintain Safe and Therapeutic Environment
- Account for all drugs including ScheduleII drugs according to hospital policy.
- Know location, care, and use of all equipment/supplies pertaining to the unit.
- Reduce waste and follow procedure for removal of faulty equipment.
- Assist in evaluation of patient care products and fill out incident reports correctly.
- Respond appropriately to all emergency codes and use good body mechanics.
- Report safety or infection hazards and check emergency equipment after use and at least once per shift.
- Ensure patient safety in all duties.
Uphold Standards of Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics
- Continuously meet Code of Ethics and Standards of Nursing practice.
- Perform all nursing procedures per established policies and procedures of OCH nursing department.
- Maintain licensure requirements and CE.
- Support patients’ bill of rights and maintain confidentiality.
- Adhere to blood and body fluid precautions and use PPE appropriately.
- Follow infection control policies including exposure control plan and employee health protocols.
- Follow hospital personnel policies and commit to quality improvement.
- Maintain communication via email and provide communication between staff members.
- Conduct all procedures according to policies, legal compliance, and regulatory standards.
Professional Self Development
- Attend CE and in‑services that pertain to assigned areas and are mandatory.
- Attend at least 80% of staff meetings per year.
- Maintain clinical skills through competency review.
- Accept supervision and guidance in a non‑defensive manner as needed.
