The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Public Health and Safety Division in Helena.

The Epidemiologist studies the occurrence of disease and other health-related conditions or events in Montana to implement prevention and control measures. This position specifically focuses on topics related to substance use disorder, and other injury prevention topics as needed. The Epidemiologist is responsible for analysis and presentation of programmatic, service-related data, and disease surveillance data. This position coordinates and evaluates and evaluates early warning drug overdose surveillance systems. Additional responsibilities include providing data and writing reports for programs and grants and responding to data requests from stakeholders.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

  • Knowledge of surveillance concepts and theories including epidemiology, statistics, and public health practice.

  • Skill in programming in Statistical Analysis System (SAS), R, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), or other languages.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including public speaking.

  • Skill in writing technical reports or grants.

  • Meet minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in epidemiology, statistics, or a closely related degree.

  • Three years of job-related experience in epidemiology.

  • Experience in substance use disorder, overdose, injury prevention, EMS, and trauma-related epidemiology preferred.

  • Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Information

This position may be eligible for partial telework within the state of Montana. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.

This position is grant funded through August 31, 2028, with the intention to seek additional funding.
