Environmental Engineer I – Water ResourcesLocation: Birmingham, AL (Hybrid) Contract- 1 Year Client: Southern CompanyWork Location & ScheduleBased in Birmingham, AlabamaHybrid work model (office + remote)Participation in remote support beyond normal business hours during flood events and real-time system operationsWeekend or extended-hour availability required during critical weather eventsPosition OverviewThe Environmental Engineer I will serve as a Water Resources Engineer supporting Southern Company's hydro reservoir management organization. This role contributes to the implementation of watershed water control plans including operational forecasting, flood control, and drought management across multiple hydro-generating watersheds.The position supports hydrologic modeling, real-time monitoring systems, computer model development, and operation of the Hydro Optimization Management System (HOMS).This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer seeking hands-on experience in hydro operations, watershed modeling, and real-time water resource system management.Primary ResponsibilitiesWater Resource ManagementSupport hydro operations forecastingAssist with flood control and drought management strategiesContribute to implementation of watershed water control plansModeling & AnalysisPerform hydrologic and hydraulic modelingSupport watershed modeling and river analysisAssist with computer model development and configurationUtilize river analysis software for operational planningSystems & Technology SupportSupport gaging systems including rain, stage, and temperature sensorsAssist with real-time instrumentation network oversightSupport data collection and dissemination systemsAssist with operation and maintenance of HOMS (Hydro Optimization Management System)Perform programming and scripting to enhance internal software toolsOperational SupportParticipate in real-time system support during weather eventsProvide technical updates during operational forecasting cyclesRequired QualificationsEducationBachelor's Degree in Engineering (required)Foundational KnowledgeBasic understanding of:Water resource management principlesHydrologic and hydraulic modelingWatershed modelingFluid mechanicsComputer model developmentProgramming or scripting languagesFamiliarity WithGaging systems and hydrologic instrumentationData collection, analysis, and reporting
