Job DescriptionPosition Overview: Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and supervision to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. This role includes both direct billable work and nonbillable project management and supervision.
The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating as well as supporting business development efforts.Duties & ResponsibilitiesLeadership and communication skills commensurate with leading a team of technical professionals in Engineering, Design, and DraftingAbility to create, reinforce, and improve technical teams in the execution of engineering designs for clients and the delivery of projects with high quality, on time, and within budgetAdvanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipmentExpert in design of protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settingsCreate and improve processes for P&C designs, including P&C one- and three-lines, AC/DC schematics, panel drawings and wiring diagramsAdvanced understanding of SCADA communication designAbility to lead a team of engineers and designersExpert in the principles of project managementThorough understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements and substation construction as it applies to utility substation and transmission line equipment facilitiesCreate quality control checklists for substation P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADAAbility to create and report on studies for voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordinationPerform calculations and studies using client specified software and standardsAbility to write specifications and implement them on engineering drawingsOversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/draftersExperience creating processes for design accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standardsCollaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clientsVisit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during constructionRequirements8+ years' experience as a practicing engineerSupervise 4-8 direct reportsBachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master's or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering ProgramsLicensed Professional EngineerOther Skills/AbilitiesSelf-MotivatedWork independentlyTeam-OrientedCustomer OrientedAble to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership to other team membersThink both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problemsAbility to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgroundsProficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendationsGood written and oral communication skillsDesired QualificationsExperience in the utility industryNOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
