Engineering SpecialistAn Engineering Specialist at HBK Engineering is a position that combines advanced technical expertise with team leadership responsibilities. This role involves applying broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices while independently evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard techniques and procedures to address unique and complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges. A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is strongly preferred for this position. Additionally, candidates are required to have proven experience working on utility or roadway design projects. The position includes acting as a team lead in coordinating detailed design phases for all aspects of utility engineering work, with direct client interface responsibilities and quality control oversight. Location: Chicago, ILWhat You'll DoDesign engineering systems in compliance with relevant specifications, codes, and client requirements for overhead and subsurface utility projects.Apply broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to ensure design compliance with relevant specifications, codes, and client requirements.Independently evaluate, select, and adapt standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to address unique and complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges.Act as a team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of utility engineering work.Train entry-level staff.Perform quality control reviews of engineering designs under the oversight of professional engineering staff.Interface with clients to discuss engineering topics within their area of expertise and to provide support to the engineering team.Prepare detailed engineering and construction documents using a variety of software tools including AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS systems, and client-specific enterprise asset management platforms.Analyze information from supplementary data sources including topographical survey, utility atlas information, field sketches, client records, manufacturer equipment datasheets, etc.Prepare reports and studies meeting client requirements that present technical information clearly and concisely.Work with project management and engineering leadership to manage project risk.Communicate complex engineering matters to internal project management, engineering leadership, and field resources.Independently manage time and schedule to achieve project milestones.Perform field walkdowns with internal staff, clients, customers, governance authorities, and construction partners.Travel as needed, typically <25%.What You'll BringBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is strongly preferred.Typically 4+ years of relevant experienceProven experience working on utility or roadway design projects is required.US driver's license and US work authorizationAbility to work independently and in interdisciplinary teamsStrong technology skills and understanding of the Office365 suite of toolsIn-depth knowledge of 2D CADD software (AutoCAD or similar) including generating layout drawings and project materialsExperience reviewing drawings or engineering materials developed by othersTraining experience with entry- and mid-level staffUnderstanding of remote communication softwareAbility to quickly come up to speed on in-process projects and hit the ground runningExperience collaborating with teams to complete larger projectsExcellent verbal and written communication skills suited for both internal and external conversationsPersistence to see projects through to completionAdaptability to change in a dynamic team environment.What You'll GetLeadership opportunities as team lead for detailed design coordinationDirect client interface responsibilities within area of expertiseProfessional growth with broad application of engineering principles and practicesQuality control review experience under professional engineering supervisionTraining and mentorship responsibilities for entry-level staffAdvanced project management and risk management experienceEnhanced client communication and technical reporting responsibilitiesField experience through walkdowns and stakeholder interactionsTravel opportunities for project work and professional developmentCollaborative work environment with project management and engineering leadershipClear career progression pathway within the HBK Organization's Engineering TrackComprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability and employer paid life insurance.
