Provide engineering/technical leadership to a skilled, qualified, and motivated substation engineering and design team by: Assisting individuals through the use of innovative techniques and effective management systems; Ensuring that individuals have training, tools, personal equipment, work environment, and technical support to optimize their performance and achieve desired results; Train an engineering and design team; Provide feedback, help set priorities, and support personal and professional growth. Perform project management activities on assigned client projects in connection with Responsible Charge Engineering duties (i.e. Sealing Designs) for substation physical designs performed within the project scope. Ensure that cost and utilization goals are met by effective planning, organizing, scheduling and monitoring of work activities. Provide technical leadership to ensure that all specific substation engineering designs are provided per applicable professional codes and standards by: Providing technical direction to project teams on complex multi-disciplined projects; Developing and maintaining engineering standards, work practices, and systems; Maintaining knowledge of the engineering and technical industry codes, standards, and best practices; Developing and maintaining knowledge of the current and future enablers, systems, and applications available in the industry to ensure continuous improvement. Manage customer relations and enhance company reputation. Assist in recruiting efforts, business development, and strategic planning. Requires up to 10% domestic travel and up to 25% foreign travel.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related engineering degree, plus 3 years of direct substation and high voltage experience as an engineer within the electrical industry, and demonstrated experience with: Leading or overseeing the resolution of engineering and technical problems for utility substations, GIS substations, battery energy storage systems, or solar collector substations projects; Leading high-voltage electrical design work on multi-discipline projects; Physical substation design, including development of equipment arrangements for various typical and atypical transmission and distribution substation configurations, design of lightning protection, grounding analysis and design, and construction specification development and support as it applies to utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities; Equipment and construction specification development, quote evaluations, and installation of high voltage transformers, group-operated disconnect switches, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, surge arresters, or other substation equipment; Checking high voltage substation designs for accuracy and conformance to client and code specifications; Electrical industry design codes and standards, including NEC (National Electrical Code), NESC (National Electrical Safety Code), IEEE, and ANSI; CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) for creating and reviewing design drawings; Performing various electrical calculations, such as grounding analysis, bus sizing, or short circuit studies; Interpreting and applying the results of power system analysis methods and software (e.g., SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, WinIGS, or CDEGS); Supporting substation design discipline interfaces, such as protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and SCADA systems, as well as civil/structural design disciplines; Building and sustaining strong client partnerships by interfacing regularly.
