Utilizing various methods of instructional delivery, the EMS Instructional Assistant will assist program faculty in providing instruction and evaluation of psychomotor skills as delineated in the program curriculum, National and Virginia EMS Education Standards, and the National EMS Scope of Practice. Employees will work varying shifts as needed to support program goals including possible evenings and weekends. A minimum of 12 hours per month required (4 hours per month for those also serving as adjunct faculty within the program). Employee will act as a lab proctor during scheduled EMS lab activities providing instruction, evaluation, and proper documentation of psychomotor skills or clinical preceptor in the clinical environment. Provide regular quality feedback to program faculty regarding psychomotor progress and curriculum. Participate in ongoing professional development activities. Work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse educational environment. Utilize high levels of energy, creativity, and motivation to foster learning. Demonstrate current knowledge of EMS education standards. Adhere to EMS program policies, Tidewater Community College policies, and the Virginia Community College System as well as the Virginia Office of EMS rules and regulations.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Current National Registry or Virginia certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT) or higher. Experience as an EMT or higher in a paid or volunteer EMS agency. Knowledge of current EMS education standards and local protocols. Maintain proficiency in all skills included in the scope of practice for the level certified (i.e. ACLS instructors shall maintain ability to teach ACLS courses/skills, paramedics shall maintain ability to teach all skills associated with the paramedic level of certification etc.). Effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Ability to evaluate skills performance and provide simulation activities, tutoring, and remedial assistance to students. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor. Strong computer skills. Commitment to the community college philosophy. Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse educational environment.

Current Virginia or National Registry certification at the Paramedic level. Experience teaching in an accredited EMS education program. Knowledge of education techniques for a competency-based program. Associate degree in EMS or related field. Experience preparing students for psychomotor certification exams. Current instructor certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS/PEPP, and/or ITLS/PHTLS.
