Robert Half is working with an established consumer electronics manufacturer seeking a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to take ownership of the embedded software supporting a flagship line of electronic products.
This is a hands-on engineering opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working directly with hardware, and taking ownership of software throughout the entire product lifecycle.
The ideal candidate is a highly independent engineer who thrives in a smaller, collaborative R&D environment without extensive layers of management or rigid corporate processes.
The position offers a unique combination of new firmware development, existing product enhancement, and the opportunity to modernize software testing and verification practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Own, maintain, and continuously improve embedded firmware across an established family of consumer electronic products.
- Design, develop, debug, and optimize embedded software using C programming for microcontroller-based systems.
- Balance new feature development with ongoing firmware maintenance, troubleshooting, and product enhancements.
- Work with ARM-based microcontrollers and vendor-specific development tools, compilers, and build environments.
- Improve existing firmware architectures and implement new functionality across multiple hardware platforms.
- Develop and introduce modern software verification practices, including unit testing, continuous integration, and automated testing.
- Perform hands-on hardware and firmware debugging using JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other diagnostic equipment.
- Read electrical schematics, troubleshoot hardware issues, and support prototype board bring-up.
- Collaborate closely with hardware engineers, software engineers, and testing teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Support production firmware reliability, performance, and issue resolution.
- Independently manage technical priorities and drive engineering solutions from concept through implementation.
Required Qualifications
- Strong professional experience developing embedded firmware using C.
- Hands-on experience with microcontrollers, particularly ARM-based or comparable architectures.
- Experience developing, maintaining, and debugging firmware for physical electronic products.
- Strong understanding of embedded software architecture, memory constraints, peripherals, and hardware/software interaction.
- Ability to troubleshoot embedded systems using hardware debugging tools and electrical schematics.
- Experience with embedded development environments, toolchains, compilers, and build systems.
- Demonstrated ability to independently own engineering projects or substantial firmware components.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, collaborative engineering environment.
