As a Lead Protection and Control Engineer, you will join the regional Projects and Services execution team, reporting to the Grid Automation North America Protection and Control Engineering manager. Your primary focus will be delivering expert Protection and Control Engineering and Consulting services across industrial, transmission, and distribution sectors throughout the US and Canada. This role involves the full lifecycle of power system design and substation automation, including the programming, testing, design, and commissioning of specialized applications.
Core Responsibilities:
- Engineer and implement sophisticated protection solutions for electrical utilities and industrial clients to ensure reliable power generation, transmission, and distribution.
- Contribute to the creation and advancement of microgrid technologies, specifically focusing on dispatching algorithms and power flow efficiency.
- Conduct comprehensive engineering analyses, including arc-flash, load flow, short circuit, ground grid, insulation coordination, and protective device coordination studies.
- Develop relay setting files, encompassing the configuration of control logic, communication parameters, and protection elements for both proprietary and third-party hardware.
- Validate customized Protection and Control systems through rigorous testing procedures at both our internal facilities and client sites.
- Utilize RTDS simulators or similar platforms to model and execute complex power system simulations.
- Prepare factory acceptance test documentation and provide testing services to ensure designs meet client requirements during witness testing.
- Manage site acceptance testing and provide field support to help successfully commission new power system applications.
- Improve internal and external engineering workflows by assisting in the development of automated software tools for utility partners.
- Engage in technical project meetings to collaborate with customers and project managers on key initiatives.
Professional Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on power systems.
- Minimum of seven years of professional experience in the analysis, study, and design of electric power infrastructure.
- Deep understanding of protection theory, fault analysis, symmetrical components, and transient/steady-state power system behavior.
- Proficiency with industry-standard power system tools and study software such as MATLAB, Mathcad, SKM, CAPE, ASPEN, WinIGS, or Etap.
- Practical experience with substation communication standards including Modbus, DNP, and IEC 61850.
- Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical conduct when representing the company to clients and colleagues.
- Strong technical writing proficiency with advanced skills in MS Excel and MS Word.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, including the capacity to deliver technical presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, work effectively within a team, and prioritize the needs of the customer.
Pay Transparency:
The standard base pay for this position within the U.S. is $52.00 - $54.94 per hour. For non-exempt roles, overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the base rate for hours exceeding 40 per week, subject to applicable laws. Final compensation is determined based based on individual experience, education, and skill sets.
