Electrical Engineer 2 – Grid Visualization & AnalyticsLocation- Birmingham, ALHybrid Schedule (In-office minimum 3 days/week – 12 days/month)Experience Level3–6 years of related experienceClient- Alabama PowerContract- 3 YearsPosition OverviewThe Electrical Engineer 2 will support the Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) within Southern Company's Research & Development organization. This role focuses on advancing grid operations, planning, and situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution systems.The engineer will support—and over time lead—projects evaluating emerging grid technologies, with a strong emphasis on power system modeling, simulation, analytics, and visualization. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer with research aptitude and hands-on power systems experience.Key Areas of FocusPower system modeling and simulation (including digital twins)Grid operations and planning researchSynchrophasor technologiesData analytics and visualizationCybersecurity testing for grid applicationsDERMS platform evaluationReal-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) with hardware-in-the-loop testingNext-generation control center technologiesKey ResponsibilitiesSupport and contribute to research projects focused on grid operations and planningDevelop research plans to evaluate new and emerging grid technologiesPerform power system analysis, modeling, and simulation studiesApply data analytics and visualization techniques to power system problemsDocument assumptions, methodologies, and results clearly and accuratelyPrepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external audiencesManage multiple tasks and projects simultaneouslyCollaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teamsTravel overnight occasionally (limited)Education RequirementsMaster of Science in Electrical Engineering (Required)Specialization in Power Systems (Preferred)Technical Skills & QualificationsProficiency in power system modeling and simulation tools such as:RTDSPSCADPSS®EExperience or training in computer programming (Python, C#, SQL preferred)Experience or training in data science and analytics preferredKnowledge of databases, data structures, and computer networking is a plusStrong analytical and problem-solving abilities
