Electrical Design Engineer – Project Management / Engineering / Industrial / Commercial Facility Power Distribution / Lighting / Emergency Backup / Fire Alarm / PE – Mooresville, NC #4997
Join an industry-leading, employee-owned engineering and construction team for a direct-hire Electrical Design Engineer role based in the Mooresville, North Carolina area. This 30+ year EPC and design-build firm delivers industrial and commercial facilities from concept through construction, with in-house multi-discipline engineering and a single point of contact for clients. The position designs power distribution, emergency and standby power, lighting, and fire alarm systems for new construction and renovation projects, with an emphasis on coordination, constructability, and production leadership.
The work supports complex process, manufacturing, infrastructure, and commercial facilities where electrical design has to fit real construction sequencing, owner operations, and code. Engineers here own drawings from early layout through issued-for-construction packages and stay engaged as the field builds the work.
Responsibilities:
- Design medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems, including service entrances, switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, motor control centers, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, and equipment layouts for industrial and commercial facilities.
- Design emergency and standby power systems, including generators, automatic transfer switches, UPS, and related distribution, with attention to load prioritization, separation of emergency and normal systems, and coordination with mechanical and process loads.
- Prepare lighting layouts and controls for interior, exterior, and site lighting, including photometric studies, energy-code compliance, and coordination with architectural and site constraints.
- Design fire alarm systems and coordinate device placement, notification, and power requirements with fire protection, architectural, and life-safety requirements.
- Prepare electrical drawings, details, schedules, and specifications in Autodesk Revit, and support model coordination so electrical systems clear structure, mechanical, plumbing, and process equipment.
- Perform and document load calculations, short-circuit analysis, voltage-drop studies, and related power-system checks, and apply the results to equipment ratings, conductor sizing, and protective-device selection.
- Coordinate designs with mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, and civil disciplines, and resolve clashes and interface issues before documents are issued.
- Support QA/QC of electrical packages, including drawing checks, specification consistency, and code compliance reviews.
- Manage production of electrical deliverables, including direction of designers and remote work-sharing partners, and keep drawing schedules aligned with project milestones.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and value-engineering discussions with project management and construction teams.
- Respond to RFIs, submittals, and field questions during construction, and incorporate as-built or design changes as required.
- Apply the National Electrical Code, applicable energy codes, and project-specific owner standards throughout design.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
- Three to five years of experience designing power distribution, lighting, and fire alarm systems for industrial or commercial facilities. EPC, design-build, or construction-oriented design experience is preferred.
- Professional Engineer license, or active progress toward PE licensure
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit. Experience with SKM PowerTools (PTW) or equivalent power-system software, AGI32 or similar photometric software, and Bluebeam are desired.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, energy codes such as IECC and ASHRAE 90.1, and LEED design criteria.
- Experience coordinating electrical design with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects, including model coordination and issue resolution.
- Ability to produce clear drawings and specifications that a construction team can build from, and to communicate design intent to project managers, contractors, and owners.
- Experience directing designers or remote production support is a plus.
- Willingness to work on-site in the Mooresville area, with occasional project or client interaction as needed.
Compensation and Benefits:
Very competitive salary, base up to $145K depending on credentials, generous performance bonus, ESOP participation in a 100% employee-owned company, comprehensive health insurance, company contribution to the employee 401(k), and paid time off.
