EHS Manager (Environmental Health & Safety)

This role serves as the primary Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) leader for a commercial cell therapy manufacturing facility and its associated office environment. Supporting approximately 50 onsite personnel, the EHS Manager provides immediate site leadership and continuity during a key leadership transition. The position oversees all aspects of safety programs, regulatory compliance, and biosafety initiatives in a GMP-regulated, pharmaceutical manufacturing setting. The EHS Manager balances strategic planning with hands-on execution, working closely with Manufacturing, Facilities, Engineering, Quality, and Operations teams to maintain a safe, compliant, and high-performing environment. This is a highly visible opportunity to influence safety culture, operational excellence, and regulatory readiness, with exposure to advanced biopharmaceutical and cell therapy manufacturing processes and potential for a contract-to-hire pathway for a high-performing consultant.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary Environmental Health & Safety resource for a commercial cell therapy manufacturing facility and office environment supporting approximately 50 onsite personnel.
  • Provide immediate site leadership and continuity for EH&S operations following the departure of the previous EH&S leader.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive safety programs that support GMP-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing and office operations.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with OSHA regulations and other applicable health and safety standards, including biosafety and bloodborne pathogen requirements.
  • Lead and manage biosafety initiatives, including risk assessments and controls for cell therapy and related biopharmaceutical processes.
  • Oversee hazardous waste management programs to ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Plan, deliver, and track EH&S training for manufacturing, facilities, engineering, quality, operations, and office staff to maintain safety awareness and compliance.
  • Conduct regular facility walkthroughs and inspections of manufacturing, cleanroom, and office areas to identify hazards, verify PPE compliance, and monitor adherence to safety procedures.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to address safety events and prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate and lead safety committee activities, fostering engagement, communication, and continuous improvement in safety culture.
  • Monitor compliance in gowning and aseptic manufacturing areas, including cleanroom operations and PPE usage, and address gaps promptly.
  • Provide oversight of contractors and visitors to ensure adherence to site safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports and documentation related to EH&S, including OSHA and environmental health and safety reporting.
  • Support emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response activities for incidents, emergencies, and unusual events across the site.
  • Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Facilities, Engineering, Quality, and Operations teams to integrate EH&S considerations into daily operations and project planning.
  • Work independently with limited supervision, making informed decisions on EH&S matters and escalating issues when necessary.
  • Support both first and second shift operations, including occasional off-hours availability for emergencies, inspections, or incident response.
  • Contribute to stabilizing a critical business function during a leadership transition and drive long-term improvements in safety culture and operational excellence.

Essential Skills:

  • Proven experience in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) management within a pharmaceutical manufacturing or similar regulated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA compliance requirements and practical experience implementing OSHA standards in a manufacturing setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental health and safety auditing, including planning, conducting, and documenting EH&S audits.
  • Hands-on experience with incident investigation and CAPA, including root cause analysis and development of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Knowledge of biosafety and bloodborne pathogen requirements relevant to cell therapy and biopharmaceutical operations.
  • Experience managing hazardous waste programs, including safe handling, storage, and disposal in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Proficiency in safety program management, including development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in aseptic and cleanroom operations, including familiarity with gowning procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Understanding of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and their application in a pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while providing clear EH&S leadership and guidance across multiple functional teams.
  • Comfort entering gowning and aseptic manufacturing areas to conduct walkthroughs, inspections, and compliance monitoring.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in Environmental Health & Safety supporting advanced biopharmaceutical or cell therapy manufacturing processes.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Manufacturing, Facilities, Engineering, Quality, and Operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to lead safety committees and influence safety culture across the organization.
  • Ability to balance strategic EH&S planning with hands-on execution in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with regulatory reporting and documentation related to environmental health and safety.
