§ 01 — The work

We are looking for an editor who can hold a 6,000-word feature in their head and tell a writer, with reasons, why paragraph fourteen needs to move. Most of what we publish is reported longform, op-eds under principal bylines, and project work like annual publications and policy reports.

The role is hands-on. You will commission writers, edit substantively (not just lightly), shepherd fact-check and legal where needed, and place pieces in outlets where placement is part of the engagement. You will also write — we expect our editors to publish a few pieces a year under their own bylines.

We do not run a content mill. We publish slowly. Editors on this team work on fewer pieces, more deeply, than the industry average.

§ 02 — What we look for

• 01 Eight-plus years editing at a magazine, newsroom, or serious nonfiction publisher
• 02 Demonstrated ability to take a draft from messy to publishable without rewriting it
• 03 Network of working writers you have already commissioned at least twice
• 04 Comfort working with non-journalist principals on op-eds and bylined pieces
• 05 Strong sense of what is and is not a story

§ 03 — What we don't

We try to be specific about who this role is not for.

• Editors whose primary skill is line editing
• Anyone who treats voice as something to be sanded off
• Editors who haven't actually written anything in five years

We read every application within two weeks. We respond to every applicant whose work we read, even briefly. We do not use ATS keyword filters.
